I have a young friend who is quite a hunter and he's decided that Buck is the brand for him. He has a couple of smaller fixed blades (a 102 and a 118) and wants a 103 now. He would like to have one with upgraded steel, but I don't know if there were any made or offered. Were they ever offered in S30V or anything other than the standard stuff?

He'd also like one with the wood handlle with brass pommel and guard, but I see that isn't even offered in the catalog.

Hey Dave , I love it when some one does a 103 Post. I not sure about the upgrade steel. But have seen different scales, but the could have been on Yellowhorse or custon 103.

The only ones with anything except the plain black handles I've found have been "specials" and were too much money for him. I haven't seen any except for the 803 that Flatlander just showed with anything but 420HC.

I only have the one plain everyday one, I may just give it to him and let him try it out. He may find he doesn't need a premium steel or fancy wood.

There is not anything wrong with the plane everyday one.He will
love it.
I do my best Dillo skinning with mine.;)

From what I've seen of his knives, he doesn't baby them so something fancy as far as handles would be sort of a waste anyway. I don't skin anything except the fat off of a Tri-Tip once in awhile, so I can't advise him. For that I use a plain old Marttiini filet knife anyway.;)

Maybe there is a Master Series 103??
I don't know if that was one they did in that series, but that would be some kind of wonderful knife.

You might be right about that, but even if they did and we could find one, he won't want to pay the price.

Dave, what does HE like? A Betley for the price of a Bug?

Woldn't be the standard 103 good enough?

Haebbie

Silver,I was just thinking that and then saw you posted it.Great! The Master Series did not entail the 103.The 803 that Flat posted is a fine model with a up grade sheath. For sure one of Buck's best. But for the guy you describe.I'd go w/ what Silver suggested. Those are real good knives in a total great package.I have one and use it a lot.Like it!DM

You could get a 70's 103 off ebay or something. It has upgraded steel. 440 C.

I third this option! I sent mine back to Buck and had them put the E2K on it and she is wicked sharp and holds an edge! Any 103 will work great though!

I just bought two of the North American Hunting Club 103's. I figure they have everything he's looking for except upgraded steel. The blade etch isn't a plus for a user, but I don't see how it can hurt.

Could anyone tell me when these were made?

Thanks David. They aren't mine (wish they were), I just put up the picture to show the 103. Here's a better picture of them. I can't decide if the tang stamp is a + or side ways T.

wow postfallsidaho, I didn't even think about that. How much did that cost you? Neat idea.

I believe it was $10.00 shipped back to me. WELL worth it!

I would watch ebay for the 103BR they are readily available! Either that or Email Larry Oden, he has them regularly!

Good luck!
