104 Compadre vs. 632 Mesa. Since the Compadre is still going strong and the Mesa is discontinued, I guess we know who the winner is, but since this Mesa showed up in the mail today and is the first one I’ve held in my hands, I never realized how similar they are before.

The Compdre is still my favorite fixed blade of all time, but you can’t deny the family resemblance.

Damn. I never realized how close they were, either.

I remember when my nearest Wally World had a horizontal knife display case, and you could buy 'em all day long. Here and there, I've regretted not getting one. I came this ---> <--- close to buying the one that you got. (*Nice score, BTW)

The 104 and 108 make a great pairing, but that Mesa might be the better "companion" knife in certain situations.

Very similar... I forgot about the Mesa.

I got a 104 this past summer for camping, and absolutely love it. It might be the perfect camp knife.

However, with holiday sales, I cheated on it and picked up a Becker Bk19, and with the micarta handles, it has a similar vibe to the 104. I like the shape of the Becker a little more for some camp food prep, but the hollow grind on the 104 makes it a slicey thing too.

Those do look quite similar!

I felt that. I also didn't realize how close they were, despite walking past Mesas many times. I think they were even on clearance for a bit, and I almost got one. Oh well.

The 104 is a kitchen workhorse in our home. It we ever did a "Buck of the Year" thread similar to what they have in the Traditionals forum, I'd probably be really tempted to cheat. The 104 isn't a new knife this year, but it gets used more than any of my other knives.

The Mesa is great, bought mine on closeout years ago for like 35 bucks I think, it does camping duty and stays in the center console of the truck at all times in case of emergency camping, lol. Wife has a 104 and I had never compared the two either, very similar and great size/shape for all-around camping/hunting use IMO.

That’s a great idea! I vote we start the thread. Go for it - and I won’t tell that the 104 wasn’t new to you this year. :)

I think I like the handle on the Mesa better, the guard for your finger at the top is longer and the bottom has a little more curve to it, and with the nice micarta they used it just feels great and solid in the hand when you're really working it in the field, I really want one in 5160 or 3V badly.

I think I heard about the Mesa here on BF, rushed to Wally to pick one up, between $40 - 50 IIRC. It’s been a good knife. The only thing I’ve done to it is grind the jimping a bit. It feels good in the hand and holds a decent edge.

That’s a great sheath! Where did you get it?

A little time with a belt sander and you can have the best of both worlds.

Ok, I won't need to cheat if someone starts a "Buck of the Year" thread in December. I have a couple new 104's incoming! They just showed up in the specials section of the Buck website.

bcci discount worked too....
Yeahh... that worked a little too well for me. When I saw them, I really wanted the 3V version. There was something of a feeding frenzy a couple years ago when the BOTM was a 104 in 3V. I missed that one. This time, I was ready. When I logged in, I saw the BCCI discount. Now I have a 3V and a D2 heading my way.

Really, really looking forward to these. My son and I are going camping with his Scout troop next week, and I'd love to take one of these along.
