Since this was originally a 104 vs 632 thread I thought I needed to continue my comparison of these two fine blades. Now that the adrenaline rush of this new knife has dwindled in the hours since I opened the box and made my first post, I've had some time to compare the two.
First, like the Buck hollow grind on the Mesa. I never used a hollow grind until I started accumulating Buck knives and I have come to appreciate the utility. The 632 is no different in this regard. The hollow grind reduces the weight and makes it very slicy. Which is something that surprised me, the weight of the 104 over the 632. I don't have a scale handy, but there is a rather significant difference between the two. I wouldn't think the hollow grind would make that much of a difference. That is not to say the 104 is not slicy. It is supremely sharp - as you would expect from Buck - and I expect it to also be very useful in chores of all kinds. The grind of the 104 is not too thick for a fixed blade. But it feels... stronger than most of my knives this size and grind. I don't know, maybe it's all in my head.
I also like the balance of this particular 104. Although I don't have any others to compare it to. Yet. The blade is heavier but not too heavy. I know some don't like the flat slabs for scales, but they do taper from the front, getting slightly thicker toward the back. It fits my hands though, like it was made for it. The 632 is good in this regard too, but the contour gets much wider by the time you get to the back. It could be "adjusted" a little I suppose. I might do that. Someday.
I regards to size, in my mind I felt like these were small-ish when I unboxed them, but when I compared them to my other fixed blades, they matched almost perfectly with my Fallkniven S1 Pro. In fact, they both fit the dangler sheath I formed for that knife. It kind of surprised me. I have always considered the S1 to be one of my "bigger" blades.
Obviously there are larger blades but these both feel like they will handle like a smaller knife. I guess what I am saying is these two are - for me - particularly this 104 (in micarta and 3V, I might add!) is the "goldilocks" for ME of all the fixed blades I own. And I have a fair number of users. It covers all MY bases. It's simple by design. It's not "tactical" in appearance. And it has the element of durability in spades. Which, at the end of the day, is what I consider most important in almost everything I own. Can I really depend on it to do the job and do it for really a long time? It's why I like the 110.
All this is to say, unless something changes, if I had to walk away from my house and was to pull one fixed blade out of the drawer to take with me (that would join an axe, a saw and a few folders), it would be this 104. Well done Buck!
Now, if they would just make it a regular factory offering, I would buy a couple more.
