104 Compadre vs. 632 Mesa

Yeahh... that worked a little too well for me. When I saw them, I really wanted the 3V version. There was something of a feeding frenzy a couple years ago when the BOTM was a 104 in 3V. I missed that one. This time, I was ready. When I logged in, I saw the BCCI discount. Now I have a 3V and a D2 heading my way.

Really, really looking forward to these. My son and I are going camping with his Scout troop next week, and I'd love to take one of these along.
both are a bargain. Hopefully y'all get them beforehand. have a good trip.....

I'm glad you guys got some of that 3V goodness, i'm fairly certain the wife will never ever use her 3V 104 for anything other than bragging about owning such a nice blade, lol.

My 3V 119 on the other hand, is my carry blade when I feel like rockin' a fixed blade, dang thing is a lightsaber, I swear it would cut through a car, I chopped through a 2x2 out in the shop with it and afterwards it still push-cuts through paper.

I got mine today too!

Love the flat grind on these! I forgot how dry the micarta feels when they're new. Some honest work will get that sorted.

They're going to work along with my other 104's. The standard one lives in our kitchen knife drawer and gets used daily. The Filson stays in the garage and helps with yard projects. I'm not quite sure how the D2 and 3V will fit into things. I plan to take the 3V camping this weekend. It may become my dedicated camp knife. The D2? I'm sure we'll find a job for it someplace.

Oh, MY! 😍 ❤️

My daughter was over at our house the other day and was talking about someone she knows that when something is really good, she says, "Oh my chickens!"

So when I unboxed and began inspecting my new 3v 104 Compadre today, I actually said out loud, "Oh my chickens!" What a great knife! Flat ground 3v, micarta scales. It's exactly what I have been looking for in an all-purpose camp/woods knife. This may be "the one" for me. I can see this being a heavy user in my outdoor life.

I recently was able to acquire a Mesa from a kind gentlemen on this forum. It's a knife I didn't know about until they were long discontinued. But I really liked the shape of the blade and the overall size. In 420HC I figured I could put it to some good use. I was not disappointed when it arrived either. It will be put to use.

What I have always wanted though was one I thought I would never obtain because it was a limited BOTM a few years ago. A 3v 104. I figured I would never see them again except on the secondary market - and at exponentially higher prices. Everytime I read someone's review... let's just say, I never wept openly... but I got very close on occasion.

But this week an email was sent from heaven - wait, not quite - Idaho, announcing that a 3v 104 was available on the Web Specials. It was in my cart and purchased before I really thought about it. I knew they wouldn't last long. I must say, it may be my favorite knife out of the box. I like everything about it. Although I might get a custom sheath for it. It's a good US made sheath, but this knife deserves some nice pants. Oh my chickens it's a neat knife!

Since this was originally a 104 vs 632 thread I thought I needed to continue my comparison of these two fine blades. Now that the adrenaline rush of this new knife has dwindled in the hours since I opened the box and made my first post, I've had some time to compare the two.

First, like the Buck hollow grind on the Mesa. I never used a hollow grind until I started accumulating Buck knives and I have come to appreciate the utility. The 632 is no different in this regard. The hollow grind reduces the weight and makes it very slicy. Which is something that surprised me, the weight of the 104 over the 632. I don't have a scale handy, but there is a rather significant difference between the two. I wouldn't think the hollow grind would make that much of a difference. That is not to say the 104 is not slicy. It is supremely sharp - as you would expect from Buck - and I expect it to also be very useful in chores of all kinds. The grind of the 104 is not too thick for a fixed blade. But it feels... stronger than most of my knives this size and grind. I don't know, maybe it's all in my head.

I also like the balance of this particular 104. Although I don't have any others to compare it to. Yet. The blade is heavier but not too heavy. I know some don't like the flat slabs for scales, but they do taper from the front, getting slightly thicker toward the back. It fits my hands though, like it was made for it. The 632 is good in this regard too, but the contour gets much wider by the time you get to the back. It could be "adjusted" a little I suppose. I might do that. Someday.

I regards to size, in my mind I felt like these were small-ish when I unboxed them, but when I compared them to my other fixed blades, they matched almost perfectly with my Fallkniven S1 Pro. In fact, they both fit the dangler sheath I formed for that knife. It kind of surprised me. I have always considered the S1 to be one of my "bigger" blades.

Obviously there are larger blades but these both feel like they will handle like a smaller knife. I guess what I am saying is these two are - for me - particularly this 104 (in micarta and 3V, I might add!) is the "goldilocks" for ME of all the fixed blades I own. And I have a fair number of users. It covers all MY bases. It's simple by design. It's not "tactical" in appearance. And it has the element of durability in spades. Which, at the end of the day, is what I consider most important in almost everything I own. Can I really depend on it to do the job and do it for really a long time? It's why I like the 110.

All this is to say, unless something changes, if I had to walk away from my house and was to pull one fixed blade out of the drawer to take with me (that would join an axe, a saw and a few folders), it would be this 104. Well done Buck!

Now, if they would just make it a regular factory offering, I would buy a couple more.

outside of Buck fans the 104 in any steel or setup is highly underrated and over looked.....
I agree completely. I consider myself a long time Buck fan but there was always seemed to be something else on my radar. I’m glad I took advantage of the latest sale and grabbed this one. It definitely surprised me. I suspect it won’t be my last.

I absolutely agree! The 104 is my favorite fixed blade of all time. I agree with jbmonkey jbmonkey that a whole lot of people outside the Buck world would fall in love with it as a user.
So would better marketing help? I guess when I started looking into fixed blades in the Buck line some time ago, the "look" didn't grab me at first. It's really simple. And there are A LOT of really amazing time proven Buck designs available that I wanted to try first. I mean where do you start? I also didn't know a ton about 5160. Please understand, I've been living under a rock for a few years. Most of my fixed blades are not super steels. But I found them all more than adequate. However, my 110 pro in S30V changed that for me. My first foray into the "new" stuff. I liked the difference in edge holding. So my attention lately has not been on the "lowly" steels - like 5160. ...I know it's far from lowly...

What got my attention was the offer of 3V and D2. Even though it was a pretty quick offer. I thought those were long gone. I feel blessed to have been able to pull the trigger the day they came out. Getting this new 3V 104 in my hand raised the bar in my mind. And having the 632 along side it, well, I'm gonna need a regular one too. I like the hollow grind in this size of knife and I can see it being very useful. I'm very interested in trying the old 5160.

I'm glad there are others here who appreciate it as much as I am just now learning to. All I gotta ask though is, Why didn't ya'll say something sooner?

yeah marketing always helps. there's a lot of competition in this knife arena it's built for. it's kinda hitting the right youruber/inst and such reviewer at the right time and getting them excited using it and their followers flood in and buy them up. seems how marketing works now on many younger folks......

I'm not a marketing person or expert, but I see stuff being grabbed up via this method a lot......

also seems to work super well with limited runs....get in now or lose out forever type marketing which I highly dislike, but that always seems to work.......Buck does play in that with limited runs, botm, etc and such and they fly off the shelves......

Yes. Good insight. I am pretty far removed from this kind of marketing. I watch a few videos from time to time but most are hard to watch for very long. I guess this is how much of the world forms its opinions anymore. I am glad I'm not the head of marketing for a big corporation that has to sell goods and services.

This bothers me more than it should too. Probably because I'm usually the one that's not in the right place at the right time. Truly thankful though, I got in on this latest 104 run.

I took my 3V camping a couple weeks ago with my son's Scout troop. It handled food prep like a champ and made tinder and kindling for a campfire after a rainy day (the fire took a bit to get started, but we made lots of tinder and got it going). I even got to do some woodcarving with it. I don't have a special sheath, but the factory standard one wasn't really noticeable on my belt. I had it on all day for about a week.

I only have 1 non-Buck fixed blade, so I don't have a whole lot to compare this to, but the standard 104 is my most reached-for. I'm still playing with these new ones to see how they'll fit into rotation.

Last week, I was in eastern PA with the extended family and we needed to start a fire for s'mores. I had left the 104 at home, so all I had was a 371 to make some tinder. It wasn't as quick, but that little slippie made a pile of excellent shavings for a 1-match (ok, 2 matches, I blew the first one out) fire.
