I am looking to build my son a starter anvil with 1045 4"x4"x14" steel as some have suggested (I dont want him destroying my anvil while learning)...I called around locally with no luck, looked online with no luck...any ideas where I could be looking or does anyone have a decent grade 4" square block up for sale?

You can use many ALOs (anvil like objects) as a teaching aid, Vann. RR track, lg sledge head, engine blocks.... take a trip to a scrapyard. I was lucky. My previous job of 14yrs was in the tool and die industry. The last 4yrs was closely linked to sales and I made many contacts in the steel supply business. My 4x4x14 1045 came from a burnout hole in a 4" plate. I visited my old shop on the night shift and was able to jump on a mill and make a few flycutter passes to clean the face. I did a half-assed face-harden by sticking the end in an lp forge for 30mins or so and quenched in canola. 4yrs and it has never been refaced or remounted in the chicken feeder. The face itself has the three edges radius to 1/8", 1/4",1/2" and the last left sharp.
