Anyone have a source for some 1045 flat bar or round bar in 1/2 inch round? Thanks, been looking all over.

Sam that is awful small stock for making hammers? If you are looking to water quench on the safe side or have a banger of a sword, give 1050 a shot it will provide a little more strength than 1045 for supporting and edge, if you want to push the envelope in water quenching you could even use 1060, but that is where I would draw the line in useful carbon content for hardness versus "ping" in water quenching.;) Or you could use higher carbon with the old under austenitizing tricks but then we could come full circle back to 1045 or 1050;).

Sam, just picked up 6 feet at my local Fastenal for making some tongs when I got back from Ashokan. Cost me a whopping $6....

Thanks for that Erik, i will definately be buying from them!

Kevin, you read me like a book:D. I am basically trying for the least possible chance for cracking, yet still being hardenable in water. I'll for sure be tracking down some 1050, i think admiral has it. I liked it when i used they're 1050, forged real easy and took to the brine it was quenched in without a problem (of course with my teacher's help as well). I was nervous, that even at such low carbon content it might still be a bit risky which is why i initially thought to go that 5 points lower to 1045. Old under austenitising tricks you say? Please elaborate:cool:.
