1060 blade

Very nice Sunfish. Great looking blade. I'm not sure where Sucess Mo is but I can tell that there is some in your shop.

As they say in Missouri "Show Me" when you get it done.

Tom- I forged this out of 1'' round stock but I'm pretty sure you can get flat bar but I haven't checked around.

Trick- The Gate way area knife show in St.Louis is January 29 and 30, It's down town at the Carpenters Hall on Hampton Ave.

Thanks everyone, Don

that gives me wood.......... absolutely beautiful blade; she's got the "look". Please post better pics as you sand! Did you do an edge ofr fulll quinch?? brine or oil?? and what temp? Where'd ya get the steel?

regards, mitch

I think it was quenched in the blood of a red headed virgin slave girl. :D

Don that's a really nice blade shape and an extremely cool hamon - like everyone else, I'm looking forward to seeing the final product. Mammoth and stag are both first rate options, of course, but when are you going to use some of that gorgeous black wlanut that you've been sitting on?

Roger

This isn't the link that I was looking for but its all I can come up with. I've got both 1060 and 1065 in bar stock at Pacific Machine and Tool Steel for years: http://www.metalworld.com/trade/aa008386.html The times I have bought it there's only one catch and that is you have to buy a whole bar. They will cut for you. Depending on the size of the material your after the bar length's range from 18' to 26'. I've only seen it in mill grade. Here's one made from it a month or so ago......

I found a reference to 1060 on Bob Engnath's old site. He says that 5160 is 1060 with one percent chromium added.

I heated the blade in my forge to nonmagnetic then full quenched in room temp oil ( I don't quench in water ) a file wouldn't touch the edge and tempered @ 375 for one hour.

Roger - I just may use some of this walnut, I've been wanting too.

Danbo - no blood was used in the making of this knife. ;)

Raymond - great looking knife, I've been admiring your knives for some time.

Guys I've been getting very good hamons also with 1080/1075,1084,1095, and my best so for has been with W1, all quenched in oil.

Thanks, Don

The chromium causes problems with getting a nice active hamon but you can get one with 5160. Simple carbon steels will give the best hamons. If you use 5160 you can use clay but just do a edge quench and it should have a nice hamon.

Don, I've also been getting some great hamons with W-2 but I've also been getting some micro cracks on a few blades. I've been using Quenchtex B which is a very fast quench. I looked into getting some type A but found out it is no longer made. What type oil are you using?

Raymond and Mitch, I'm using quench oil that was given to me about 8 or 9 years ago and I don't know what kind it is. It came from a plant in Memphis that was making high tensile wire from 1075M, I would guess it's a fast oil.
I have had no craking with W2 and I've made quite a few blades from it, I do get a good hamon with W2 but it's less predictable and doesn't stand out like the lower alloy steels do, W2 is still one of my favorit steel though.
The clay I use is Satinite(spelling?) just mix it with water to a cake frosting thickness and put it on the blade about an 1/8 to 3/16 thick, dry it with a torch a little and heat treat right away. I got this 1060 from a guy on Ebay about a year ago. I hope this helps and I'll show a picture when it's done.

Sweet! you know I love the hamon on that! I look forward to seeing you at the Gateway show.

Don, I'm late in getting in this thread, but I wanted to put my honest sincere opinion in also: that's a beautiful blade. Like the others before, I anxiously await the photo in it's full dress uniform, it's going to be great! I'm betting that half the guys in this thread are now looking for 1060 (as I am :o). Thank you for the information you've given us, and the outstanding picture showing your true art.
