I was given some precision ground steel which i THINK was 1084,, and recently some more whch IS 1095. My question is:

It seemed the 1095 ate my hacksaw blade up wayyy faster than the 1st steel. Does this seem right or is it just my perception ?

Also what is the BEST blade i can buy for cutting steel with a hacksaw

since i dont have a band saw id like to make it ezr on myself.

1 more question, what steel would you recommend i use, seeing as i have basic tools to work with

Thanks,FOG

Don't know the details of 1064 (maybe it's 1084?), but it could simply be that one steel is annealed and one is not. I suggest a cheap angle grinder and cutoff discs from Harbor Freight over a hacksaw. You'll be into for $15 or less and be much happier. Just use some ear plugs!

Spend a few bucks and get yourself a high-tension hacksaw frame and bimetal blades. It's $20-25 maybe and will make a WORLD of difference for you.

THANKS Deker, I do have the hi tension frame . But i didnt know about the bi-metal blades. I,ll hafta get some

Is there a big difference between the hardness of 1084 versus the 1095 ?

maybe my blade was just dull alreadydy

It would be normal for 1095 to dull your blades faster, it has a little more inherent hardness in it softest state than steels with less carbon but more importantly that excess carbon is in the form of carbides which are hard on tools. Like Deker said, good frame and good bi-metal blades.

Guy, thanks for that answer. I was sure it dulled the blade faster.

I did buy a bimetal blade last night and that worked VERY well

Thanks evryone,Fog

Ah, my wife's old stomping grounds (Titusville and Vero Beach). I've only visited the Space Coast once but it's very nice down that way. If you have the choice the 1084 might be better for you, it will be easier on your tools as in it's soft state it is completely pearlite and is a bit less picky about heat treating than the 1095 as it will harden fine in most oils.

GUY, Thanks for the info. I need a steel that will be ez to HT since im new to all this.

DC of DC knives lives close and has been great at getting me started and even offered to HT some for me. But i do wanna learn myself.

Quick question for all you guys that know all this stuff....I have been shooting for an edge hardness of around 62 HRc with O1 differetially heat treated. Can I get that out of 1084 as well?
