Hi Guys.
For a year now I use 1065 Steel usually for medium size blades. I'm pretty happy with the heat treat i use to do but I look something optimal for very big heavy use blades. Usually i use other steel for big knives (NZ3~K455~S1).
I was wondering how to achieve best properties for big machete.
I need it to be tough and the hardness is not so important here, 55RC would be enough.
The steel i have has a lot of Mn i think and its not shallow hardening steel like some other carbon steels i know, so i can quench it in cold veg oil and its fully hardened.

I use to edge quench it in heated oil (122F), and temper in 356F. this way i got blade about 58-60Rc, tough and hard.
So i was wondering what method of HT should i chose to get optimal toughness/ hardness for a heavy duty machete/short sword?
1- Should i quench it differential? edge quench, draw back edge quench? maybe in room temp oil for longer quenching.
2- how to temper it? what temperature to use?
3- should i temper the spine higher with a torch after full blade tempering?

What do you think ?
i would appreciate your help a lot.
Best Regards
Giedymin

For a tough Rc55 big blade - It should be evenly heated to 1500°F (Kiln would be best), fully quenched in several gallons of warm oil ( 100-120°F), and oven tempered twice at 500°F.

No need to draw back the spine or do anything like and edge quench. Simple and straightforward is the best policy for consistent and good quality results.
