1075 for first time maker?

Probably because it's nearly eutectoid. If I'm wrong someone will correct me but I believe that means almost all of the austenite is transformed to martensite in the quench. Subsequent temper cycles should convert the rest. This can be achieved with a relatively simple heat treating set up. Plus, it makes great hamons if you're into that (I am).

Some would say a perfect choice.

^^^This.

It's available.

It's butter soft and slightly oversize on arrival.

It has the right amount of carbon to saturate the matrix at quench with little to no leftovers that will form pesky carbide structures. These small wonders would likely irritate a guy using an unregulated gas forge to HT.

It takes a wicked useful edge when heat treated properly.

Aldo needs your entire life savings so he'll make a certain port authority an offer they can't refuse. Go Aldo go Aldo go Aldo...

1075 is a great choice for a new maker. Very close to 1080 1084, being eutectic. Simple to heat treat and makes a great blade. Andy, Aldo is going to tell that guy that either his signature, or his brains, are going to be on the discharge manifest!!!
