??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

It's a lot of work, but might give you interesting patterns.
The wire inside tires is 1075
-burnout some tires and play with that.??

What is pallet strapping made of?
It seems like spring steel to me - I have seen differing reports of it being 1075 and/or junk.

I have test hardened some different pieces and it all snapped like glass

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Kelly Cupples has 1070 or 1075 not sure which and I think that it is .125 so maybe not thin enough for you. The large pallet strapping that I have is 1095. I checked with the manufacturer before buying.

Hello:

where did you get your straping from.

there is a laminated beam manufacturer in the town that I used to live in. They band shipments together using 1 1/4 x .060 thousand banding. after reading on here years ago about strapping I decided to do some checking and called the manufacturer of the strapping. I was told that it was a high carbon steel and upon further questioning that it was for all practical purposes 1095. so I bought a sixhundred foot coil of it. 95% of the damascus that I made prior to 2003 was made with this and bandsaw blades.

was it unpainted. The painted stuff i think would be a pain.

It was painted black but like Don said it was no problem. I just stacked it up and put it the forge and applied flux when everything was red. never had any welding problems.

This reminds me, I was doing a damascus demo in Florida years ago. These guys were spending a lot of time removing the paint from the banding they were using. I told them they didn't need to. One guy said, "it wont weld with the paint on". I just smilled and showed them how the forge weld painted steel :D It was fun!

That's sweet. i need to order a roll of some 1075 and find some cheep 15n20 in a roll.

JT did you ever get the message I sent you or did it get lost in the internet graveyard?

I think all this talk about thin layers is interesting. Now I want a mini forge and press. In other threads you guys are making the mini bench top press. Small knives dont need huge equipment.

If anyone wants to sell some small pieces, I sure need some.

the banding they use on railroad ties is good stuff, ive used it before, and also alot of machine shops, if ya buddy up with them will hook you up with large quantities of bandsaw blades,
