new knife maker here. Looking for simple carbon steel stock 1x8” thick, 3 inches wide because I want to make a wider knife. I’d even settle for 2 inches (but the knife i want to make is 2.25), or I could settle for 3/16 stock.
Anyone know where to get what I need? I looked at the sticky thread and clicked through all those sites and nobody seems to have it. Half of those sites are defunct anyways. Are these steels in short supply or something? Or am I missing something?
Thanks for you help!

Welcome Daniel,
The stickys has a list of steel suppliers. There is a lot of other good info there too. New makers should take the time to read them, as they answer a lot of questions.

A lot of us use Aldo at New Jersey Steel Baron, USA Knifemakers, Alpha Knife Supply (AKS), and the other catalog companies like Jantz, Texas Knife supply, K&G, Sheffield, etc..

Take a few minutes and fill out your profile so we know where you are and something about you.

Thanks! Ive read through the whole sticky, done a ton of research and watched a lot of videos. I'm getting super excited to start and Im sure I'll have questions along the way. As I mentioned in my post, I looked at all of the sites listed on the sticky thread, and they're all out of what I need. I called NJSB and they said itll be a few weeks but they should get it back soon. Thanks for you help! I'll post some pics when I have something to show.

1095 is another good steel to try until you can get 1080. It's great to work with and there are plenty of folks that can heat treat it for you until you have the ability to do so yourself. New Jersey Steel Baron has plenty of dimensions to choose from.

I’ll look at those steels. Thanks for the recs. If I do decide to do sendout HT, is the risk of warpage lower? Meaning could I leave less material on the blade prior to HT? Or should I still leave a good amount of metal on there for the final beveling.

Take a look at 80CrV2 as well.

I would recommend 80CrV over 1095 for a new maker if he is going to do his own HT. 1095 isa bit trickier to HT with simple equipment.

I’m just going to hold out for 1075 or 1080/1084 I think. Based on Aldo’s post yesterday (in a reply to another similar question) it should only be a week or two until they’re getting resupplied.

Thanks for that info... I enjoy working with 1095, but still send it off for HT. I have a couple projects going with 80CrV and it's great to work with... didn't know it was simpler to HT than 1095.... good to know.
