Was at a show recently and came across a fix blade made of 1080 in a nice brushed finish. Now I' ve owned and used quite a few 1095, 5160, and other tool steels but have not heard of 1080. It must be close to 1095, yes? What are it' s differences and advantages if any? Will the uncoated surface require a bit more maintenance? Thanks.

I believe that is one of the 10xx family of steel, where the last two digits represent the fraction of a percent of carbon. Therefore(see three dots) 1080 would be 0.80% carbon.

I've seen 1084 used alot as a good forging steel, and 1050 as part of damascus when the edge is something, but I've never seen 1080 in use.

Ah, you' ve jogged my memory Amacks. Indeed, the dealer did say it was forged! Perhaps he did say it was 1084. The knife was made by the nephews(?) of the late Rudy Ruana. Can any one else confirm or add to this? I' d like to know for collecting purposes. Thanks.

Since you asked for confirmation, yes, Amacks is right. I doubt you'd notice any difference between 1084 and 1095.
