I found a place locally that will HT and temper up to 20lbs of steel for $30 if the process is the same for each piece of steel. (she said oil quenching is 30,air is 40 and so on) I have a 1/4 in piece of 1084 that I need to get HT, if I buy some 5/32 1095 from Aldo, will the HT process be the same?

Like dperk said they are different processes even though only slightly so. You also wanna make sure they are using proper quenchants for your steels. If they aren't your knives will perform poorly.

Just buy more 1084 from Aldo. It is excellent steel. You will not be able to tell the difference between it and 1095.

I wouldn't think that the differences are enough to make that big of a difference overall. Not a noticeable one anyway.

The Austenitizing temps. are different, the tempering temps are different, and the quench speeds are different. Trust me, even though the temps are only slightly different they all make a noticeable difference.

Darrin does excellent heat treating at very affordable prices.
