1084 getting scarce?

Is 1084 getting really scarce? I am struggling to find what I want (.125x1.5 or 2) As a beginner, I really like being able to do my own heat treat in a small non-PID controlled gas forge I built. Is there a good substitute that is easy to find and is still suitable for my set up for heat treating? Oh, and a Merry Christmas to all you guys who have helped me learn so much over the last 2 years!! Thank you, Don

Aside from carbon content, is there a difference between 1080 and 1084?

I'm already liking the 1084 I just got. Cuts nicely with a hacksaw.

Aldo's 1084 has a touch of vanadium. Other than that, they're functionally equivalent.

Thanks Jason, that's a great thread. Good to know I'm not imagining that I like this steel (so far). I don't have a lot of experience grinding ANY steels in particular, but this seems easier than the 1095 that I DO have experience with.

Are you open to different sizes? They had at least 2 sizes on Dec 2nd. Sounds like I need to keep my eye on the site.

I've also heard that it's best to call as they don't always have accurate information online. Not sure how true that is, but it couldn't hurt to give em a ring.

I am also wondering about the supply of 1084. I would like to place an order with Aldo and sent him an email asking when he would have some available - haven't heard yet. I am also looking for 1/8" stock as I don't need anything thicker.
