1084 heat treat

Mike, I mentioned pyrometric cones in this thread yesterday, so there's a small description there. There's also a link to a supplier. Googling "Orton cones" will provide more info; orton has directions on their site.

They work well in a furnace at austenitizing temps as an indicator the pyrometer wasn't way out of whack. That said, they require some "interpretation". Perhaps Stacy or someone will know if they come in temp ranges suitable for tempering. i wonder if Tempil makes something for low ranges, other than the crayons? A high-quality candy thermometer in the right range is a good choice for a tempering oven. A digital thermometer with a decent thermocouple can be had in the $75-100 range from Fluke or Omega.
