The only word I can think of to describe how that looks to me, is "sophisticated." Nick has the unique ability to take every necessary element, simplify it and perfect it, and tie each to the rest so quietly and with such authority that it takes your breath away. Think about it - have you ever seen a knife from Nick that was anythiing but perfected? I haven't.
Nick, that's a real beauty! Gorgeous flow, fit, and finish on that one. The rounded blade heel gives it a Scagel-esque appearance, which is a good thing IMHO. I bet that blade is just a cutting & slicing demon. The slightly flared handle looks like it would be real comfortable and solid in use. I like all of it!
Thanks fellas! I'm getting a late start today (worked too late) and it sure is nice to start the day with kind words like this from friends.
This blade was flat ground down to a thin edge, and then slightly rolled/feathered in with a tiny bit of convex.
As per hardening, I put this blade into Tough Quench about 1/2 the blade width. I held it there for just a quick second and as the color dropped right at the oil level, but not at the spine, I put the whole blade in. This whole thing took about the blink of an eye as far as time goes. I ended up with a hard edge and spine, with a springy center band (60 spine/edge, 49 center). Crazy...I probably couldn't do it again
I have to put a belt on my head or Dave would make my head swell
Nick, I think that's one of the best looking hunters I've ever seen. Neat clean sharp lines, the Burl is beautiful and the workmanship is perfect. That one is almost too good to sell!
Hey Nick, did you use your salt pot to austenitize this blade? If you did and don't mind me asking, what temperature are you using for 1084? 1500 degrees?
