I am making some paring knifes with 1084. What method do you recommend to Heat treat in a electric Klin?

Thanks for any advice

Jay

Pre-heat kiln to 1500F and let stabilize.
Place blades in kiln on a rack to hold edge up.
Heat for five minutes once temp returns to 1475F.
Quench in 120F canola oil or room temp Parks #50.
Remove from oil, clean gently with sop and water, temper twice at 400F for 1 hours each temper. Cool in running water between the tempers.

When you say "cool in running water" - so this is a rapid cooldown directly from 400? Does the water temp matter ( cold water this time of year right out of the yard hose).

Water temperature doesn't matter. You can plunge it into your grinder bucket if you want. There is no danger of warping or cracking at that temperature. The quench does benefit the blade(Though, the gains are negligible) but more importantly, speeds up the process.

For the small blade on a paring knife I find 400F works. It yields about Rc61-62. 425F would drop that to Rc60/61, and 450F about Rc58/59. A larger or more rough use blade in 1084 would be best with a 425-450F tempers.

Thanks for the advice. Can I do aluminum block cooling vice oil? I appreciate all the feedback.

No, the aluminum plate quench is for air hardening steels, like D2 and the stainless steels. You need oil. Canola heated to around 120 degrees will work for 1084.
