So I'm taking everyone's advice and abandoning my unknown steel. The recommended 1084 steel from njsteelbaron is apparently completely sold out. Is there another source that you all use or is there a comparable steel recommended for beginners? Thanks

Looking at the website, only the 1/8th and 3/16 thick 1084 appear to be sold out.. 0.156 and .250 seem to be available in many widths.

Call Aldo. He sometimes lists certain stocks as unavailable when he runs low, but he may have a few bars on hand. Otherwise, check with him about sizes of 1075 or 15N20.

Another option would be 1080 from Kelly Cupples, but if you are doing stock removal you'll have a little more prep work as the stock will come with a little more mill scale.

What he said. Go with whichever size Aldo currently has that is closest to what you were originally looking for, or get some of the 15n20

I've really taken a liking to 15n20 for paring knives and bird and trout knives. 1075 was listed as out of stock last week when I was looking.

You could try alpha knife supply, Texas knife supply. Jantz or many others as well.

I was also looking for .125 a couple weeks ago from Aldo and it wasn't listed for a day or 2, thenafter I waited that day or 2 he had some available in 2.5' width, so I would just check his site often

CALL Aldo. He is a great guy to talk to. He doesn't bite ( usually).

He will fix you up. If he really doesn't have it he will suggest a good alternative or let you know when it will be back in stock.

That's interesting...the last time I checked the website, I thought I ran through all of the options and all said sold out. Now I know to just check the website frequently.
I did check a few other places but I thought I'd ask here first.
Thanks for the responses.

1/8 is pretty much impossible to get it seems Ive been watching Njsteelbaron for like 3 weeks and its always been sold out so I just bought 5/32 instead.

Just going to re-iterate what's been said here 3 or 4 times already, since 99.99 percent of problems related to Aldo's business seem to be people's refusal to call him on the phone. Don't email, don't text, ignore the website. Aldo's old-school. Pick up the phone, dust off your croaky, socially starved voice, and interact in a more personal way.

I know it's hard to believe in an age where people try to sell multi-thousand dollar crap on craigslist "TEXT ONLY", and you can buy-sell-return most things with free shipping without any human interaction what so ever, but it's the way it is.

First step of anybody who's doing business with Aldo, should be to give him a call. Last step should be "ask fellow internet users".

I bought over 25,000 pounds of W2 using the telephone a few years ago.

The stuff just wasn't available on the interwebs. :D

I'm new here, this is my first time buying ANYTHING related to knife making and there wasn't a sticky titled, "how to buy steel from Aldo".
I figured asking fellow internet users, who make knives, on a knife-making forum might have some insight.
Now I know to just call-thanks

Sorry jwesthurl, got a bit of a rant off my chest, didn't mean to take it out on you in particular.

I wasn't trying to sound mad or anything I just leave for school before calling hours and get done with practice after. I'm actually very happy with NJSteelBaron because I ordered on Sunday and it arrived today.
