Wanting to make my first knife. Cannot find 1084 in any usable size anywhere.
Went to Kelly Cupples site, and also Aldo.

Nobody has it listed in stock.

Thought about trying 1095, but everyone says 1084 for beginners???????

I just started my first knife today. I ordered 1095 because it was cheap, but after much research I found that the heat treat is difficult to do with out the proper temperature control and quench oil. I will probably be sending my blades out to get heat treated or waiting until I build myself a heat treat oven. I would honestly wait for the 1084 if I were you. I'm sure others will hop in and suggest other steels too. I don't even have my knife fully profiled and I am so proud of where I am so far. I'm sure you will have the same feeling when you get started too. Hope everything works out!

Looks like Aldo has some 1084, but only if you're buying some pretty large dimension stuff. Does Kelly have any 1080? If he does, I'd just grab some of that, otherwise, you may have to wait. 5160 is also a good beginner steel-pretty forgiving and can make a great knife.

Check with Kelly Cupples at http://www.hightemptools.com/steel.html
He carries 1080 which is very similar. I haven't checked in a month or so, so I am a bit unsure of his availability.

Of course you could always send it off for heat treat. If you were to go this route you could pick whichever steel you wanted.

Good luck,
Chris

Call Aldo, often times he's got stuff in stock but not on his site... it's how i got my first batch

He said recently that he was getting popular dimensions soon. I take that to mean that he's currently out of stock on those dimensions, but it couldn't hurt to call.

I feel like the second he gets his steel in it's going to sell out immediately. Guess I better email him to see if I can reserve some! :)

Call Aldo back and ask him for recommendations. I would look at 1075, 80CrV2 (1080), 5160.

Alpha knife supply has really decent prices on 1080+. It is very close to 1084. Good luck.

You've been pointed the right directions. Kelly's 1080 and Alpha's 1080+ are essentially the same thing as the 1084 you're looking for. They're not the same, exactly, but pretty darn close, to the point most of us would never know the difference.

I do believe that the 1080+ is closer if not identical to 80CrV2.

1080+ had cromium and vanadium, not really the same thing. IIRC they said it IS 80CrV2, just renamed cause it sells better. He said it was some where between 5160 and 52100.

80crv2 is 1080+. It's in the L2 spec, but not all L2 will be the same as this steel. 15N20 is a great steel that is relatively easy to heat treat as well.

Hello all- long time listener, 1st time caller. I too was recently bitten by the steel bug and after reading everything I can I also settled on 1084 as the steel for my 1st blades. USA knife maker was the only online supplier I could find with it currently in stock. I ordered 2 bars, 1.5"x24. They contacted me yesterday and said they only had 2 12" bars in stock. I figured that would be a good start and had the difference placed on back order with a 4-6 week turn around. They were very helpful and are even covering the shipping on the backorder, and since I'm in Alaska it can get expensive. Thanks all, im looking forward to getting into knife making and Posting again soon.
