I use 1095 and now I'm using 1084
I 'm giving it a 2 hour temper at 400 .
Is it like 1095 that it needs 2 - 2hour tempers too?

I generally go 2 1 hour tempers starting at about 400F. If it's chippy after the first one, bump it up 25 degrees and test again after the second hour. That said, quench temps and quench medium make a lot of difference in tempering temps so you should test with your setup.

I prefer two hour temper cycles, a lot is going on inside the steel, and it takes time to happen. The tempering is where the steel becomes a usable knife blade, so give it enough time to work.

All blades should get two tempers. Any retained austenite will be converted to martensite in the first temper, and then that new martensite will be tempered in the second. The second temper also assures complete evenness of tempering in the blade.
