1095 as a Wonder Steel?

Hey skmo......

I had a quick chuckle over your post...... If you have a hard chrome Machax it is 4140 chrome moly...... I have had many an "expert" tell me it is terrible cutlery steel....LOL.....LMAO....... Your blade is in the 53-55Rockwell range of hardness and is literally as tough as an M1 Abrams.... The cans that the Chobham Armor are made from is 4140........

Welcome to our forum and please come back often...

1095 IS a wonder steel. What the poster(s) above indicated about staying on top of your sharpening is true. However, one of the beautiful things about the 1095 used in Beckers is the ease with which the blades can be resharpened.

I carry this little 14 every day. I use it for anything and everything. Sure, I'm not into "hard use", and I'm not chopping down trees or trimming bricks, but I still use it.

I'm always amazed how quickly I can get it back to sharp. This was after just a couple minutes on the Sharpmaker this weekend. This works for me.

Vaseline tastes terrible :barf: (I feel every knife should be thought of in terms of food prep, so that's a big factor in my book.)
I hear you. I don't usually think of carry knives in term of food prep. I usually use gun oil or wd40 on my blades, so they are rarely (if ever) are used for any type food prep. I bought some mineral oil and have been thinking of transitioning to it on knives I might like to use for food prep sometimes.

Sharpening is an art, quickly learned and a lifetime to master.....

Unless you use a KME. Then you can master it in about 10 minutes and start drinking....

No one has ever confused me with someone who can really sharpen a knife to a razor's edge. However, now that I have a KME I'm thrilled with how much of an 'expert' I'm becoming. Haha.

My large and still growing Becker family members all have great working edges on them that remind me to be extra careful when fondling them and especially when I'm putting them to good use. Is it the steel? Maybe...I've got a couple others that I'm having a little harder time getting quite as sharp.
