1095 coating

So for a new project, I want to make a large sized chopper knife (10" blade) and looking around at most existing models, 1095 seems to be the choice of them all (something about its ability to bend well without snapping). Looking more into the steel type, it seems rusting is a potential issue, as the steel is not stainless, and can rust without proper care. It seems most manufacturers have gotten around this by putting "crinkle" coatings on the blade, so the immediate cutting edge is the only area susceptible to rust. Anyone know of some home made "crinkle" coatings or any other ways to prevent 1095 from rusting without constant maintenance? Thanks for the help guys!

The crincle coatings are rough and add resistance to the cutting.

If you search for stripping, it's just as popular to remove that coating and sand them down.

Cerakote is smooth and popular.

Brownell's sells rattle cans of bake on coatings like that if you are in the US

Ya know I kinda feel like an idiot for not thinking of Dura-coat sooner. Thanks!

Duracoat and Cerakote are two different products, I have not used Cerakote, but I have used Duracoat on several guns and I believe Cerakote goes on much thinner, I could be wrong in this, but that is just my opinion from owning a few knives that are Cerakoted versus what I have done in handguns with Duracoat

I hit one of my old folders with duracoat matte black just to see how it would hold up on a knife. I prepped the blade extensively before spraying with one heavy even coat, and it was wearing off of the blade in about a week with generous usage. I'd go with cerakote.

I have used cerakote on my blades and I was very pleased with the results. Very thin, super hard, and smooth. Cerakote , like many things in knife making, is easy to learn but difficult to perfect. It also requires a fair amount of tooling. Might be worthwhile to pay a pro to do it. I have mine done in batches of 25 and it usually ends up costing about $15-$20 per blade.
Best of luck
