1095 CRA vs HR?

Thanks, Nick. Checked them out and they were a few bucks less than Admiral. So, this is probably the reason I kill so many drill bits. I've always used hot rolled 1084. I love the steel, but it's killer on the bits. I probably created a lot more work for myself when I was doing all my stock removal with files. Dumb.

I don't know what kind of bits you are using but I have never gotten hss bits to drill 1095. All I use are cobalt.

Something here I don't understand why all the trouble drilling? It doesn't mater what is being drilled every one seems to have trouble. I have been drilling for over 50 years and simply don't understand it. Start with a sharp drill and SLOW the drill down, apply cutting oil and start drilling let the drill do the work don't force it, too much pressure or speed is a quick way to failure, go by feel just keep it cutting. If it quits cutting sharpen it and try again. You can work harden tool steel so if you keep on drilling with a dull drill and it gets hard quit and finish with a carbide drill.
What is a cobalt drill? I have been using a set of HHS drills for the last 16 years and never ruined a drill yet just sharpened them. I use carbide spade drills to drill heat treated steel. Gib

Cobalt bits are a step above HSS and below carbide. I think it is a high speed alloy with 8% cobalt. Sears sells them as does texas knifemaker Supply. Several people have told me that HSS will drill about anything, I just wished I could repeat it in my shop. As to oil and speed, I always use oil and run at a low speed, I may use to much pressure though.
