while looking at a web site i saw they had 1095 cr and 1095 hr. now i am gonna go out on a limb and guess cr stands for cold rolled and hr stands for hot rolled.
could some one tell me what this should mean to me? is one better than the other? do they heat treat the same? do they work the same?

thanks

I assume it's marked CRA and HRA .Without the 'A' [annealed] you'd have a problem machining it ! CRA starts out as HRA but with a final CR step to get more precise dimensions. Not much difference when you're making a knife. We get questions here at times about machining problems. This is steel that hasn't been properly annealed .Some tool steels can be bought 'precision ground' which is expensive and of no use for knives. Others can be bought 'decarb free' which is helpful. Your CRA and HRA will have a layer of decarburized steel which has to be ground off.
