I've been forging some larger, chopper blades lately and thought I would share one with you guys. Ive been forging for about 2 1/2 years, and I haven't posted much here.

This one has a 9 inch blade of Aldo's 3/8" 1095, stab. spalted maple handle--a little over 5", stainless hardware.

OMG - That is a freakin' nice one! I like everything about it. The wood finish looks awesome

(nice anvil - a Peter Wright? Had it resurfaced?)

Thanks, Yeah it's a 103# P.W. that a guy gave me. I knocked a little off the top with a surface grinder--it had a lot of small dings and knicks.

Tad, that is the She-it! I like the finger guard configuration. I love that knife! What finish did you use on the maple?

Steve,
It is stabilized, so I sanded to 800 grit, and lightly buffed with white compound.

Thanks,
Tad

Whoa, now that's what I'd call a chopper. Very nice work ! I really like it.

one of the best handle shapes on this type of knife I've ever seen. A little too polished for a working knife, but that's ok:)

Did you use a ferrule, or is that a bolster type thing? 3/4 tang by the looks of it? Balance just in front of your mark or so? Any idea on its weight?

I like everything about this one. I can feel it in my hand, even though it's not.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments. I appreciate it.

Lorien,
It is basically a stainless spacer, not a true ferrule. The tang pretty substantial--thickness and height--at the spacer. Hidden tang construction with good tang length. I am not sure of the weight or exact balance point(I'm not at home), but it is .372" at the spine with a very gradual distal taper, so it's very blade heavy.

I looked at this Beauty 60 times today:thumbup:

Tad, I am just starting forging. Would you mind if I were to "try" to forge one similar to your style? Not that I can handle it yet, But sure would like to try:thumbup:
