There are a lot of steels out there. This is going to mean a lot of threads, isn't it?
I wouldn't decide this knife choice on edge retention. Especially since edge retention isn't a single thing its edge retention doing what sort of work? Slicing cardboard? Chopping concrete?
There are plenty of differences that may matter more than edge retention. One is stainless, the handles are very different, convex versus V, different thicknesses. And I have found that if the main use is on wood (at least the wood here), edge retention of almost any decent outdoors knife with a good heat treat is good enough to last until you get home to the stones.
If you find that the vg10 won't get through your tasks, then maybe you have extraordinary tasks? If so, get Big Chris to make you an s110v knife. There, you will very likely notice the difference. Or just pocket a DC4 and touch it up in the field. You should probably pocket a dc4 anyway, in case you accidentally hit a rock. S110v doesn't keep a decent edge through that, either.
I guess I'm suggesting to decide which knife you like best, since both steels will work. Then again, I'm just guessing at what the knife is for. So who knows. Personally, I love the vg10 F1. Kept wanting to trade up for the better steels, but the vg10 has never let me down, so I can't justify the cash on a "better" steel that I wouldn't notice.
