1095 vs vg10

I was under the impression vg10 was much better edge retention wise then 1095. After doing more research I seen otherwise. I know heat treat makes a big difference but how would the esee3 compare to the fallkniven f1 vg10 in edge retention. I just posted another thread on vg10 and cos and u guys have been very helpful. Thanks in advance

There are a lot of steels out there. This is going to mean a lot of threads, isn't it?

I wouldn't decide this knife choice on edge retention. Especially since edge retention isn't a single thing — its edge retention doing what sort of work? Slicing cardboard? Chopping concrete?

There are plenty of differences that may matter more than edge retention. One is stainless, the handles are very different, convex versus V, different thicknesses. And I have found that if the main use is on wood (at least the wood here), edge retention of almost any decent outdoors knife with a good heat treat is good enough to last until you get home to the stones.

If you find that the vg10 won't get through your tasks, then maybe you have extraordinary tasks? If so, get Big Chris to make you an s110v knife. There, you will very likely notice the difference. Or just pocket a DC4 and touch it up in the field. You should probably pocket a dc4 anyway, in case you accidentally hit a rock. S110v doesn't keep a decent edge through that, either.

I guess I'm suggesting to decide which knife you like best, since both steels will work. Then again, I'm just guessing at what the knife is for. So who knows. Personally, I love the vg10 F1. Kept wanting to trade up for the better steels, but the vg10 has never let me down, so I can't justify the cash on a "better" steel that I wouldn't notice.

Yea your right. Task aren't that huge just am trying to justify the money I'm spending I guess.. I've changed my mind a hundred times today but I took a look at the esee3 for the same price if not cheaper and wide some research on 1095.. seen where someone said it was definitely better edge retention wise then any of the new super steels today.. don't know from experience so I'm trusting all u guys to guide me in the right direction

Wow, that's just bollocks. I have many 1095 knives from different makers, and many different modern "super" steels. The person who thought 1095 had better edge retention than super steels is so incorrect it's not funny. You can argue if the increased performance is worth the extra cost, but there's no way 1095, even properly done, touches the performance of modern cutlery steel.

Don't get me wrong, I like a 1095 knife — I just reviewed a 1095 custom I use every day. But I certainly don't expect it to hold an edge like high carbide stainless on abrasive cutting jobs.

I think ESEEs are overpriced myself. They're a fine knife, to be sure, but I just don't think you're getting full bang for buck when there are other options, made with finer materials at just a touch higher price point or knives with the same materials for much cheaper.

Compare esee three edge retention to the vg10 f1... that may help me a little more.. I've heard many good things about both. But for every good forumn I've read I've read a bad one too.. probably all boil down to what I like more in the future but until then I have no clue haha

You're so overthinking this.

You're not going to be able to get through this without some amount of trial and error on your part. Buy one you like, use it, sharpen it, get used to it. Then, later, get something else. Use it, sharpen it. Compare.

This is a journey. You don't need to decide which knife to get; you only need to decide which knife to get next.

Dangerous that was exactly what I needed to hear. Dangerous u always come threw with a good answer for me haha

Having said that dangerous im leaning towards the esee3 unless I can get the bark river gunny 3v.
