Boy was home alone with younger sisters and Black bear that had previously been a problem in area was on porch of home. After other methods to try to get the bear to leave failed the boy retrieved a gun and dispatched the troublesome animal.

Authorities aren't going to issue any citations and allowed the family to keep the meat.

I like the fact that the boy didn't cower under the bed and instead took the actions he thought necessary to protect himself and his little sisters.

The question is going to be asked, "Where was Mom and Dad?"

I have an 11 year old son, and he would have done the same thing. Good on him, I say.

I agree, it's nice to hear about someone having a set of balls instead of shaking my head in disgust at tales of spineless metrosexuals whose first reaction to danger is to speed dial 9-1-1 and/or their therapist.

Metrosexuals piss me off in general.

The comments on the story are what really piss me off. I live and work in a metro area. I make a good living. I ride the train to work. I recycle. On the surface I would be the epitomy of a non "hick" type city dweller. I would never have the lack of intelligence to put down the child for protecting the sisters and I certainly wouldn't put down the parents for allowing the boy to have access and know how to shoot a rifle. This is part of living the rural life. I hope someday to be able to live in rural america and give my kid the same opputunities.

Thought I was in another forum. Sorry bout that.

Mike C, I believe OilSlick was referring to the comments that readers of the newspaper story had posted on that site in regards to the story. Many of those posters were upset/angry that the boy and his sisters didn't have 'adult supervision' and that he even knew how to use a gun much less have access to one, and some peta types were just upset that the bear was killed. Fortunately, many other more reasonable posters also posted on that site and strongly answered the others.

If I read Oilslick's post correctly he supports the boy and the actions he took.

Well, I was going to move this to Wilderness & Survival, but after MikeC's political rant, I feel like just closing the thread.

How about we all show some common sense here and just discuss the topic, instead of intruding POLITICAL PARTISANSHIP WHERE IT DOESN'T BELONG.

If you want to spout political philosophy, buy a membership and open your own thread in the Political Arena. Do NOT hijack Current Events.

Um, yeah I had to read mike's post twice to get where he was coming from. Maybe if he'd read mine twice he would have understood where I was coming from. No sense in arguing for arguments sake mike. I actually agree with the posters directly above me.

I spent my summers on my grandparents ranch in Carey,Idaho(about a 5 hour drive from Driggs, but just as rural). Learning to safely shoot, fish, and whittle were part of growing up. All the boys and most of the girls could handle a rifle and a pocket knife by the time they were 11 as well. It was normal for us.

I know I'm from a different time, but I still think this young man did the right thing. I remember a time when no one would question the actions of this young man. Keeping your family safe is a value all Americans used to take pride in.
I hope most of us still do.

This time period has more compassion it seems, but taking care of your family first and foremost- your life first and foremost is the most important.... Just don't torture the creature.

That said, the boy did the right thing:thumbup:

I dont really think the bear was threatening him or his sister. Its not like if it tried to get inside his house. If the bear had attempted to enter, then thats a different story. Personnaly, I dont think he was really threatened just yet. I would have a waited a little longer. Really, the kid put himself at more risk by opening the door or window to shoot the animal.

A bear that comes onto the porch -- even if it leaves -- is a bear that will be back. Maybe at a worse time, with little kids running around outside. Read the story: this bear was on a collision course with an early demise.

Fish and Game Conservation Officer Doug Petersen said the black bear had been a problem in the area near the county transfer station, and he and Fish and Game Officer Lauren Wendt had set up a trap earlier in the week.

"The bear had been hanging around and we got multiple complaint calls," said Wendt. The bear had been getting into garbage cans and bird feeders in the area.

Petersen said officials may have had to put it down anyway. He said that in situations where the bear has been a problem around humans or threatens human safety, they usually don't issue citations.

aww, poor bear :(

He was probably just chillin' out.

Would you guys really shoot this guy?

An 11-year-old boy killed a bear at point-blank range last Wednesday night after it wouldn't leave his family's porch.

Petersen said the family reported the bear Thursday morning. Fish and Game trapped and euthanized another problem black bear about two weeks ago, after the bear reportedly let himself into a home.

I don't think you, nor I, can judge if it was or wasn't an immediate threat to the 11 year old and his younger sister.
But.................
Two problem bears in 2 weeks. One entered a house. They may have been raised by the same mother and learned from her.
I don't know when you consider a bear to be a problem? Is it after he knocks your head off your torso in your kitchen afyter arriving home? A bear in a interior room has no escape route and will most likely use everything he has to defend himself as his first reaction.
I like wildlife but if i lived there and a bear was on my porch and i have taken precautions not to leave garbage in cans outside and brought bird feeders in at night, I'd shoot it in a second without any after thought.

Nope.... but i wouldn't sit down with him- i would take a pic and leave him something to eat though:thumbup:

I'm sure your joking but this is a prime example of how bears become problem bears and then are dispatched.
