howdy all ya'al
ok so we had 110's in 440c stainless
425 and 420 hc s30v bg42 and two types of Damascus ( did I miss any?)
so
I hope every one knows that Carbon Steel will take a sharper edge then stainless ;)..
and in that thought ...
how many of you'al here would like to see a 110 blade in Carbon Steel?
vote in the poll and give your thoughts on that
me I think they should ...:D:thumbup:

I'd love to see mirrored 5160 steel being produced by Buck knives!
excellent post!

I've always liked carbon steel and its sharpness. Take care of my knives, so rust is not a concern.

Don't forget ATS34 as a 110 steel. I have used 420HC easy to sharpen razor sharp. I have used S30V a little harder to sharpen. Carbon steel would be an interesting new steel for a 110. It is like any steel out there some will buy it because its carbon steel some won't.

Yes, we've already had a 110 with carbon steel, 'D2'. Which is as far into carbon steels as I care to go. DM

I had a Schrade 7OT which is kind of a 110 copy in 1095 for many years. It is a good knife but I found the blade grind a bit thick compared to a 110. It was okay once I learned to sharpen.

I'll take the Buck with the laser sighted plasmatic ray gun attached.

I'm happy with what we have currently. I don't see any need for overly rusty blades.

If you're going to non-stainless blade, I would like to try CPM Rex 121. You can take the hardness up to 72 HRC.

Having spent a lifetime perfecting the art of negligence, I'm sticking with stainless.

Modern refinements have made the whole "sharper than stainless" argument either wrong or so general as to be almost useless.

That said, I think it would be cool to see a 110 in a carbon steel. It'd be neat if they went either way, you could do a classic, traditional carbon like 1095 or O1, or an awesome, high wear resistance carbon like M4. I could see the appeal of either, or both.

Heh! I like this!

If we're talking about small carbide or fine grained carbon steels like 1084 or 1095 and comparing them to fine grained stainless like 420HC, then I agree with this so long as we're talking about stuff that's hardened in the 58Rc range. Other than patina, I can't really tell a difference between 1095 and 420HC (or Sandvick 12C27) when they're all hardened in the 58Rc range.

When they're softer, like the the 55 or 56Rc range, I find a bigger difference. I find stainless of this sort in this hardness range sort of gummy when sharpening it. It creates stubborn burrs or wire edges while soft 1086 or 1095 seems to hone up much more cleanly. Case's 420HC and Victorinox's Inox both feel gummy to me compared to say, Case's CV or Opinel's Carbone. All of these steels are in the 56Rc range (roughly).

But at 58Rc, I can no longer tell the difference. I'm very happy with Buck's 420HC and see no reason to move to carbon other than that ol timey romanticism of patina (which I get but can live without).

What I'd be much more interested in is not different steels but different grinds. I really prefer full flat grinds or better yet, thin flat convex main grinds. Really a much more versatile blade imo. So much so, it's sort of ruined my taste for hollow grinds like on the Buck 110.

110 blade steel!?!
Why not 110 blade steel.....as in S110V blade steel?
...sorry, I couldn't resist.

In all honesty though, a carbon steel 110 would be sweet. I am not sure about 5160 though, seems kind of inappropriate for a folding hunter. 1095 would be nice.

I agree with the above which is why i haven't voted. I'd take 420HC over 5160 in this knife ANY day. But make it 52100 or W5 or M2 or CPM-M4 or go nuts with 10V or Rex121
