Hello everyone, I recently posted some pics up in the Buck gallery of the 2 110's that I own (a Standard 110 and the Bass Pro 110). Now I am working on ordering two from the custom shop. I know a lot of you have experience with the custom shop offerings and I'd like you opinion on the following.

110 with a polished 420HC blade, nickle bolsters, KOA wood, no pins, no finger grooves. This would be for my collection, not a user. I think the polished blade would compliment the nickle bolsters. I also do like the a little contrast that the KOA wood would give it.

110 with a S30V blade, nickle bolsters, smooth asian waterbuffilo, no pins, no finger grooves. This would be a user for me to carry.

Any opinions on the two above knives? I appreciate any input you all have.

The KOA wood is very nice. I have one in brass bolster no finger groove and pinned handle. Your version would be nice. The water buffalo would be nice also no doubt. I like the finger groove for a user but have several without. I think you will be happy with either or both.

Ed, thanks for your input. I've never thought about having finger grooves on a user, but you make a good point. It would make it a litle easier to hold onto if it got wet or slippery. I'll have to think about the finger groove option a little bit more.

howdy alaskanmonte
IMHO for a user that will be used wet, hard, ect
i would not get waterbuffilo,,, it is subject to cracking..
i have had one crack and had it replaced and it was a display knife..
your best bet on a user would be walnut / oak / flame wood..
if you really want fancy user try the ram's horn with rivets would be your best bet

i dont have a rammy as yet but the ones i have seen seem to be a good choice..
any one else out there have thoughts?

Dave,
Would the orangewood that the custom shop has be a good choice for a hard use knife? I'm not a fan of the oak or walnut (too dark). They also have blue colored wood grain, but I'm not sure how the blue would look on a knife. If anyone has pics of the orangewood or indigo wood please let me know. Thanks.

i have seen the orange wood and it is not my fav..
i seem to recall that it is a lamanated wood like production 110's
but yes it would hold up quite well
the blue would be my personl pick of the two..
but to each his own.. i like the oak and walnut a lot
and i have a rammy comeing ...
i like it better then the wood ones and think the
ram horn would hold up very well
and with it natural texture would not show minor use marks!
yep for a show off user i think i would
""need more ram horn.."":eek::D

Thanks for the information. I'll make some decision tommorrow and get my knives ordered. I'll post some pictures when they come in and up-date everyone (Plus it gives me an excuse to show them off).

I'd get a Ram over a Buff.

Here's mine. It's a user...even took to the county fair. But it wasn't tall enough to go on any rides :(

Sounds to me like you are just gonna have to order one each. Stagger the purchases out so it don't look so bad all at once :D:D

I have one of the fiji orange wood and like it ok, Managed to get it in BG42 before all of that steel went away. Got it with finger grooves, ns, and no pins. I ordered it because at the time, it was the cheapest one that had BG42 steel . I planned on it being a user from the beginning but with the fiji orange, and BG42. It may not ever become a user

But, you gotta do the ones you like. What we like doan matter.

and,,,,btw....your addiction hasn't even started yet :)

it gets worse..
but here we understand...

Here is some custom shop 112's I ordered. The KOA got sent back...notice the blacking from the rouge from bolsters being polished. So be aware of that as a possibility with KOA. The others are cherry, buff, and Indigo blue.

My opinion on finger grooves is don't spend custom shop money till you know if you like them or not (with regards to a user, a collection knife well is pretty with FG IMO).

Dave's comments are dead on about RAM as a very nice EDC. I don't really agree about the buff comment above. If you like it get it. A mirror blade, NS, and smooth buff would be real slick looking.

If it was me going for a fancy EDC it would be a Brass, Rivets, Ram, & S30V or NS, Rivets, Elk, S30V. If you want an economy EDC the laminated woods & S30V are good choices. Bear in mind that one of the things you pay for in a Custom Shop 110 is the outstanding fit and finish. So if you like 420HC because it is a great user blade and like its ease of sharpening go for it with the F&F in mind.

As far as a little pretty for the collection, a mirror polished blade and whatever handle/bolster combo that strikes your fancy is what you choose.

I hope all these pictures gives you something to think about when ordering a special knife because that is what the custom shop knives are...special knives.

well as you can see flat has come a long way in treating his addaction in the last year!
he realy knows how to handle the "bucking shakes feaver" syndrown
and gets great relife from the symptions!

bucksway calls takeing them out to clean and rearange the act of playing
barbbie knives...
me ...i have had buck feaver since my first one in 67..
last time i took them out to clean i took a pict of the herd

as you can tell i have my own way of handleing the buck shakes..

Wow, some of you guys have incredible collections. Thank you for the pictures, it helps me visualize what they will actually look like. I have to run over to my daughters pre-school and when I get back I'll be ordering my knives. Thanks for all your help. (I'm still undecided on what to order but I;m sure I'll be happy when I get them).

NOTE: I do prefer the 420HC as it is easier to sharpen, I didn't think that the fit & finish will be that much better. Good information.

Thanks for all the help this will be my first time ordering a custom type knife and I'm very excited!:)

Alaska, if you are buying users, don't be afraid of the S30V and sharpening. It will stay sharper longer and with the diamond hones, it sharpens up ok. Just a little learning curve.

I didn't think that the fit & finish will be that much better.

To me it's a good bit better than a mass production knife. Little things like centered blade, blade pop and snap, no wiggle anywhere come to mind. But I'm with Pack Rat and I would get a premium blade. Just sayin some like the ease and convenience of 420HC. Post some picks of your knives when you get them. g

Well, I placed my order and of course it was different then I thought it would be. But after browsing the picture gallery above and thinking about it, this is what I ordered:

Collector: 1 CS110 in polished 420HC with nickle bolsters, no finger grooves, no pins, Rams Horn slabs.

User: 1 CS110 in S30V with Nickle Bolsters, no finger grooves, no pins, oak slabs.

Its nothing like I listed at the start of this thread, but I thought about it for a couple hours today and this is what I decided on. I'll post pictures when they arrive (are they here yet ;).

Here's some photos of some of my 110's. I have quite a few more but these are some of the more interesting ones.
