Is there any refrence that discusses 110 sheath variations and dates of manufacture? I was pondering this as I looked at my small 110 collection last night. Sorry if this has already been asked, the search function has not worked for me for a few days now...

There have been discussions here about sheaths, I know of no reference in print...but many knowledgeable folks come here.. If you have certain questions ask here and you will most likely get an answer. Hope this helps...Preston.

What interests me is the sheath color. Never seen it before.
Can someone date the knife by the sheath in this one? Just curious.
Thanks...

Note: tried the search option here for sheaths but the search function is not working...again. So, I figured a thread about Custom 110 would suffice.

Buckaholic:

That's a pre-1989 sheath. From 1989 on, the snap was triple stamped around the outer edges. 1980 was the last year of the higher "ears" that extended up a bit further past the bottom edge, as well as the last year for the large belt loop. The custom shop used sheaths with 1/4" embossing, while 5/16" was standard on production 110 sheaths.(Just keep in mind that sometimes a sheath can be of incorrect vintage for the knife it is with.)

The sheath in that picture is closed, so it's hard to see if it has the higher "ears". It doesn't look like it does, because the rivets look pretty even with the bottom edge in the photo from what I can see. If it is even, it is from 1981 through 1988.

Thanks pjsjr. I have seen pre-1980 110's but never noticed the "ears" on the sheaths. I need to pay more attention next time :)

I have several post 1989 110's and there are sublte variations in the Buck logo in the leather and the snaps are different (shiny vs. "dull" finish). Also black vs. reddish leather.

Messy...
Just be certain that if you take a pic of the sheath with a knife that it is the right sheath for the knife.

Some peeps go nuts over that detail. Just when I think I need to get a life, something like that sets people off...

Yes, I've noticed that some of the guys here in the forum are pretty detail oriented when it comes to their Bucks. :)

...

No way! Really? Who could that be? LOL!:)

The devil is in the details. Actually, almost everybody here is detail oriented...some are anal...some are crazy anal(me).

HA HA...I couldn't recall.
In reality it was a good lesson. I learn so much here.
I dunno iffn I'm "detail" oriented...but little things do bug me.
Got two Buck boxes with no warranty paperwork. One from a retailer, one from auction. Have a slight dent in the wood in my 110AG (hardly visible and it's on the spine). Open all my boxes ONLY from the non-label end.
Hate that some of the foam envelopes with some of my 110 herd are torn a bit or the masking tape is torn. I'm sure I could think of more things regarding the Buck Fever I have...but that's just off the top of my head.

Nope...not detail oriented. So I must be anal.

Goose, you've got your head and your heart in the right place;) :D ;). Preston

One day, when I am all finished cataloguing all the Buck knives ever made, I will start on the sheath variations.
There is so little information on sheath types. We have changed them so many times and usually, these changes happen without any kind of paper trail. Most of the data I get on sheaths comes from pictures of knives i see on one of those large, online auction places. Not the most scientific method, but it really is all I have to go on.

I'm finally getting around to posting some sheath pics. As Buck110 asked, I tried to get 3 views. The one on the left is a 110 two dot (74-80?), middle is a 110x (1990) and right is a lazy T (2006).

And here are pics of each knife & sheath with corresponding tang stamp:

edit: never mind.... having trouble posting thumbnails for some reason. Sorry chickentrax!

I got 2 leather sheaths from buck a few years back, they ar black horizontal folding hunter sheaths, they look like sunglasses cases, but are very comfy to carry a 110 in.

Thanks for the info Buck110. Now I only wish I had more sheaths to show you.... better start buying more 110's!

Thanks for the great info Buck 110.
I have a couple of older 110's with the long eared pocket like the one on the left. However mine differ on the belt loop side. One has the 110 stamped below the loop and one has the stamp above. Can you determine vintage from the presence of the stamp and the stamp location?
Thanks.....Mike

Thanks for the help, I've got some early (late 60's thru mid 80's) 110's with sheaths, boxes and paper work that I've been wanting to document with pictures. I never seem to get the time but I'll try to work on it this weekend and post my results if I'm successful.
