After getting some advice from Crex about how to set up a quenching tank in my new shop I took one of his ideas and ran with it. Carl had mentioned finding an old RV hot water heater thank to convert to a quenching tank, the Idea stuck with me. I found a 110 V replacement heater for a hot water tank ($10) and went from there. I used an "O" ring flange washer and conduit nut (1-1/8")on the tank side of the heater. In the picture I used a light switch but went for a 20A toggle switch in the final product.

It will heat 2.75 gal. of room temp oil to my that is hot in about 90 sec. The next step in the plan is to add a thermal coupling to make it set it and forget it.

That is cool Dan,

You could probably put an switch on it like from an oven or a light dimmer switch to adjust the temperature. If you pair that with an deep fryer/candy thermometer, you could get your oil exactly where you need it.

I have my oil in an military ammo can and heat it up with a torch on the outside of the can. I use the candy thermometer I "borrowed" from my wife to watch the temperatures. I may have to look into getting one of those elements though...

Thank you, it is a 40mm can (for a mark 19). I have also picked up a thermostat but I need to build a housing for it something about exposed wiring and hot oil.
