Hello, I purchased a 112 conversion from my gun dealer today. He said it was brand new, old stock, and it came from their distributor with only the 112 and sheath; no box or papers and did not know who did the conversion.

Was hoping someone here may know the work. The blade has a date code of 2013.

Thanks.

FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! Pretty sure you got taken for a ride. Yes, there are legitimate conversions of Buck 112's. Yours is not a real Buck knife. China is making 110 and 112 autos based on counterfeit knives. I see dealers pawning them off as real Bucks at the gun/knife shows. They know what they really are and lie thru their teeth. Saw 3 counterfit auto 110's at a gun show Friday evening. The sheath, which you say you have, is kinda like thin cardboard in texture and will have a plain brassy snap without a Buck logo. It gets tricky because the local dealer here has some real Buck sheaths with the fake knives.

Here is a photo from a Chinese website showing a knife like yours with 'filework'. These are not just conversions, the whole knife is fake. Typically these can be purchased directly from China for about $40-$50 shipped to your door. Dealers can easily double to triple their money. If you look closely, the word 'BUCK' is absent from the tang (Photoshopped?) but you can see the 112 and 2013 date code followed by USA. All of the counterfeit 110 and 112 auto's that I have examined have 2013 date codes.

Don't have to take my word for it. Send your photos to jhouser@buckknives.com for verification. He is the one tasked with their anti counterfeiting effort. A picture of the sheath would help also. What he says will carry more weight. He's busy, give him a few days to respond. (longer if it's hunting season...:))

Thanks for the Buck contact. I'll reach out to him and also get the distributor the store received the knife from. I have always purchased Microtechs from authorized dealers but never thought Bucks were counterfeited too.

There is a thread about the fourth one down from the top of this forum if you want to wade thru about 300 posts on fake Bucks.

You are new here. Welcome to the Buck forum by the way and nice pictures. Most can't figure out how to post a picture the first time...:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

112 and 110 have a steel rocker pin dont they?

your knife and the fake show what appears brass rocker pins. not saying that is the end all be all of fake vs. real just what caught my eye.

There are other clues. I was thinking at one time doing a writeup on counterfit Bucks but Joe Houser suggested to me he has found revealing all the details is counter productive. My understanding is he will verify if the knife is real or fake but not give out detailed information why. I have a collection of Counterfits and realizing I'd never be able to sell them (in good conscience) and since I decided not to write about them it was money down the drain and stopped adding to the collection. Yes, what you say is true about the pin but how about this. A true conversion has the knife completely disassembled, who's to say what pin was then used for reassembly. It's no longer a factory pin.

^i had considered the swapped pin on a conversion being maybe a customization...kinda why i asked as i dont own any real conversions. wasnt sure if a brass pin would be strong enough for the rocker over time.

good points. thanks for the follow up.

Interesting.

The fit and finish and quality look excellent!!!

What have these lying dealers been charging for the ones you've seen at gun shows?

Any idea if the mechanical system is well done?

I spoke with the gun shop today. The owner and manager are off on Sundays but will speak with them tomorrow. I also emailed Mr. Houser at Buck with pics of the knife and sheath. Sheath looks fake compared to known authentic ones so I imagine the knife is fake too. Below are some pics of the sheath.

I have no doubts that the gun shop will return my funds whether fake or not.

You have to press the button pretty firmly to flip open the knife. Since I knew this was a conversion, I was not sure if that was normal or not.

Thank you again everyone for your input. I am new to knives and this board but after the responses here, I am going to sign up for a Gold membership.

Yes, there's a little smear on the tang where they removed the "Buck."

They put a lot of work into it and it looks well done. I wonder if they market it at all under their own brand name?

I'm hoping Buck will make a 112 version of the new auto in the next few years but till then. .There is no easy way to stop fakes except to 'Just say no '..

I saw right away that this was a fake.
There's a thing with the bolsters on most of these Chinese counterfeits thats easy to spot, just compare to a real Buck and you'll see what I mean.

I got stung with a counterfeit conversion last year too-another 2013 date code(I'd imagine the Chinese just made one tang stamp and are still using it). Another giveaway-may have missed it in the thread-is the conversions all have full-thickness wood, not the Dymondwood Buck uses.

They're also ever-so-slightly thinner than a legit 110 or 112. The worst part, I paid $140 for the thing, three days before I found our the factory auto was coming out. Can't even bring myself to sell the clone AS a clone, someone down the road is bound to think it's a Buck too.

Edit-forgot to mention, the nail nick is in very slightly the wrong place. Compare with a known-real 112.

I see you did get your Gold membership
Buy more (real) Bucks and come back often.

i see bladehq has ones that look similar to this fake. dont know if they are fakes or not....... not sure what the deal there is....

Now That one is interesting-and maybe the reason it's out of stock. Maybe they got bit too and got rid of them? I see the same full-thickness wood instead of Dymondwood and the same 2013 date code in the listing photos. IF they are/were clones it shows how widespread they are if a well-regarded seller lists them too.
