117 Small Special W/ Cocobolo, Brass & 420

It's a 119 the size of a 118. Personally, I like the 118 above all others. It's just the perfect size for deer dressing IMHO

Would love to see Micarta; red, white, (& blue), or maybe kevlar or lightning strike CF?

As well as an upgraded steel. Something we're not really accustomed to seeing from Buck.
Cts-40cp, cpm s35v
Cts-B52, or A2

Been thinking of picking up a 118 myself as I've never played with one.Since I bought a 105 back in the fall its kind of become my favorite for now.I'm thnking this might be the year I just play around and try a bunch of ones I've never tried.

Don't forget a shout-out to the old Theatre Knife like Houser's Red Widow.
That makes for a beautiful knife.

More comparison pictures.

Packing up now for a duck hunt on Currituck Sound next week. I have decided to use my C&C Buck 117 to clean ducks this year (used the Buck 102 and Buck 105 last several seasons). Just realized I have owned this knife two years (next month) and have only cleaned one deer and a few fish with it - it needs to clean some waterfowl. OH

I like my 117 brass and cocobolo a lot. Out camping it was so handy and just the right size for many of the tasks including fishing. The 420hc has performed very well and I don’t see myself needing a better steel for now. It would be nice if there were a S35vn to try.

Lets hope copper and clad can talk buck into a s30v or s35vn version love elk handle wouldn't mind if it was full tang like the 819 signature series SPECIAL they are good strong knives just a little bulky for skinning and riding a horse

wow that's a great picture Sir. got the handle shimmering and blade popping out with depth and countours of the fuller and hollow grind and such showing up well. really great job there. enjoy the hunt.....

Thanks guys - when I get a great photo it is pure genus (aka pure LUCK!) Zak, I prefer the Buck 118 for big game (for me that is primarily whitetail) - but I like to experiment with various knives, especially Buck Knives. I’ve cleaned one whitetail with my 117 last season (when I misplaced my 118) and it worked fine but I missed the greater sweep portion of the 118 blade for ease in skinning. I like the Buck 102 for filleting duck breasts, going to try the 117 for that task this season, see if it works as well or better. OH

I used the 118 to help butcher 2 deer this year, touching up on steel now & then...Knife worked fantastic.
Handles well skinning as well as deboning, zero fatigue.

Wonder if these premium steel inquiries have become a dead end for the 117? I emailed buck about the possibility doesn't sound like any anytime soon. I think some begging is in order. Would love to see it in the custom shop

I agree, but it seemed like the Brahma series kinda stalled and didn’t sell. I myself didn’t like stacked leather handles as they soak up liquids. I’d like to see another version with brown micarta/ brass and without the groove. S30v or S35vn or cmp154 blades. The cocobolo/brass is nice too it just needs an upgrade steel.

I’ll agree that the 118 is a better design for skinning and boning large game and deer with the upswept blade.

For a utilitarian blade for camping as well as fishing and hunting I prefer the 117 design and I can still use it for skinning and boning large game just as easily as using a 110 clip point which I have done for many years. This is the reason I chose the 117 over the 118 because I intend to use it more so for utility than just the specific task of skinning or boning.

I don’t know but I wonder if being considered the little brother to the 119 that the 117 got over shadowed by big brother as a hunting knife being more robust and imposing to little brother and the 102 also being the more cute size. I think it’s more about personal preference than anything and for me the 102 handle is small and doesn’t fit my hand well where the 117 handle is just right. The blade length is just right as well imo.

Handle size and blade size a huge factor for me as well. Its not too big not too small. As far as 118 upswept blade style being better, i have a buck akonua with s30v but its just as long as a 119 Special (i have 4 with s30v). A 117 full tang like the 819 signature series would be a dream
