12" AK Question

Yvsa,

If you are serious I would be eternally grateful. I have worked on it with the strop and sandpaper but it seems to me at least I can't get enough off to get it right.

E-mail sent HD.:D

Bruise, you're back! Some of us were wondering where you went. Don't go running off and getting lost out there. Here's where you belong.

Like Hollowdweller, I'm getting the impression that most, if not everyone who owns a 12" AK seems to really like them...

In another thread, Sarge (Sylvrfalcn) stated:
Bought this one as a big brother to my 12" AK villager (by Sher's little brother Kumar), but dang if that little half-pint lumberjack of a 12" AK don't hog up all the work.

I'm considering a 12"/13" to be my 'next to buy' khuk. For some strange reason the 'villagers' really appeal to me. Didn't see any pics in this thread, so does anyone happen to have any pics of 12"-13" AK villagers they can post or email me.

Hollowdweller, don't mean to steal your thread...:(
I didn't think it would be appropriate to start another on 12" AK's...

Which is the one that took the chunk out of your arm?

Yep, it sure does need a cleaning. And, that is the clean part of my room. About the only thing you can find it the room is my bed, Brief Case and Keyboard/Mouse. lol

The 15" AK is the one that attacked me.:p lol But it's behaving it's self now.;)

Am out of town right now, but should have some cool pics to share when I get back.:D he he he

Wildmanh,

What are the specs on that Camp Tramp? The blade looks wide. Is it thick? How does it stack up as a chopper?? Does it compare to the AK??

Hollowdweller, Here are the Camp Tramp specs:

LOA: 12 & 1/2"
Handle: 5"
Blade (tip to handle): 7 & 1/2"
Cutting edge: 6"
Blade width: 1 & 3/4"
Blade thickness: 1/4"

The CT is blade heavy which helps make it a good chopper. Probably one of the better Production choppers in it's size. The edge is also a little thick so it can take more punishment. Not to mention, it's Differentally heat treated.:) Last week I customized my CT by removing the black coating and satin finished the bevels. That seems to have helped it's cutting ability a little.

For more pics and pics of my mods Click Here! If you like Beefy knives made from Carbon steel, you will probably like this knife.

I have not had a chance to do a Field comparision yet between the 12" AK and the Camp Tramp, so I don't know which is the better chopper. But when I do I'll be sure to post it for everyone to read. The Camp Tramp is about $130 plus shippping which makes it more than the 12" AK. My personal Preference is towards the AK because it feels more alive in my hand and I like the handle more. But, which would I take camping with me? If room and weight are not a problem, Both.:)

Here are two more compairision shots:

Hope that helps. BTW Yvsa has a few Swamp Rat knives and has used them. I'm sure he would be a good one to find out how well they stack up against a Khukuri.:)

Thanks WM,

One thing I like about the khukuris over the knives for chopping is it seems a lot of times like the with the big wide tip of the khukuri you can chop stuff that is laying on the ground, where with the knife if you chop something on the ground while standing you have to dig the tip of the knife in the ground. However that knife looks like the end of the blade is wide enough to chop like that. Nice.
