HI forum affected me another 12 incher bug...

As Gorkha soldiers and MA practitioners have proved, khukuri can be applied to combative use. But a atandard size khukuri looks more like a sword than a knife, for me its unfair to other types of knives compared to a khukuri. With a belief that a khukuri is as useful as others of same length, I placed a special order 12"er Ghopte to Uncle Bill a few months before for MA practice and other chores. He cautioned me a special order without wood model could bring a disappointing result. I'm very happy to say he was wrong!

A 12" Ghopte by Sanu (cross marked) had a perfect finish, and perfect arc spine which is 1/2" at the habaki style bolster, thinning out gradually to the tip. The VERY fat round belly gives a graceful atmosphere, almost disguises the knife as harmless. Its balance point is close to that of a 15 incher by its heavy weight blade, still feels much lighter in hand.
Well said a beefy 12 incher as a "Pocket Battleship"! I have no constraint of London Treaty, I could make a dreadnaut out of it.

The Ghopte, chakma and karda had a little bit loose fit in scabbard. I already ground the handles of karda and chakma to give a perfect fit, took only 5 minutes file job. Yet solved the loose fit of khukuri, but it's okay. I'll have plenty of playing time with it.

Cool comparison Wrongfriend!

So, what would a submarine be or an aircraft carrier be?

The term "Pocket Battleship" has already been used and reserved for the 12" AK. Sorry. But if the Ghopte does the same thing, six of one, half a dozen of the other. Same-same.

Wrongfriend,
Mine's by Durba, love it, remember my post "could be used to take out BUNKERS" now YOU UNDERSTAND!Can't decide where you want to use it,right??Find yourself picking it up just to feel the size & weight don't you!ENJOY!!

Thought a "Pocket Battleship" could be enhanced to any beefy 12"er.... I have to find another name to fit my Ghopte's category! What's a submarine, and aircraft carrier? A submarine is invisible "in action", so a khukuri rum with glass, transparent "blade" is it! An aircraft career must be a classic type khukuri with all the kind of daily tools like an SAK.

jim, Your Durba Ghopte's pic must be the one that made me decide the "FSX" khukuri!
Yes, just feeling the size and weight is fun itself. Enjoy yours, too!

My 12" Sirupati by Sher is snickering....

(Rusty sold me on the 12"er, and I'm glad he did. This one would survive a direct hit from above and begin propagating its own new species in the wake.

Blues, what are the pros and cons of Sher's 12" Sirupati compared to 12" AK "Pocket Battleship?" I'm really curious at that point as a newly affected HIKV-12!

I've shed the "first blood" by HI product today, first time since I got my first 20" AK almost two years ago. I put the karda of the Ghopte to a DIY strop, an old belt with compound on it, today. Then somehow I decided to take it for shaving.

Now I know I was wrong.

12" Sirupati for serious social work. 12" AK or it's ilk for general purpose.

I think Rusty's concise answer is spot on.

I must say though that the 12"er from Sher inspires confidence in near any mode that you'd want to employ it.

It is thick enough to be near indestructible, heavy enough to chop with, fast enough to fight with (and woe be to him on the wrong end of this nasty little khukuri), and well balanced in the hand.

When I first purchased it sight unseen I thought one pound for a khuk of this size might be a bit overboard, but, per usual, the kami's magic and sense of proportion
once again defied standard logic.

Kind of like a bumblebee that doesn't know it's not supposed to be able to fly.

O.K., that's nine replies, and none of the other newbies have come forward, so I'll show my ignorance - What is a "Ghopte"? If, after all the hours on the HI site, I've missed a blade style, I'll have to go to my room for the weekend.

You need to take the wax out of your ears,or quit dreaming!Your little "wimpy"

Jim:

12" Sirupati = 8" blade.

One torso = approx 9" thickness.

Compressibility 1 1/2 to 1 = 12" wound depth for 8" blade.

And finally, Randalls #1 and #2 fighting knives, max blade length 8". Sirupati's minimum blade length 8".

You might want to reconsider the 12" capabilities, Jim, and give it a little more respect.

Many thanks for the pics and background, everyone. I'm all better, now

Wheeeew, that's gonna be an expensive blade - - -

Cost of blade + gas to SD + extra blades as rent to greedy son (for when I'm thrown out) + lawyer (for divoce settlement and sueing greedy son to get blades back).... OTH, it wouldn't be all that bad if it came with an engraved blade like the KNN's introduction piece. I need a co-signer.
