12 inch Villagers

I feel bad about all of us teasing you unmercifully.....Well I feel like I SHOULD feel bad. I really do.:)

I'd be happy to trade my 12" villager for a trip to South Africa!:D

Here is my 12" villager so far. Maybe half way done with it.

Here is a new pic hope it is better...

Mark, that pic was pretty small. Can't really tell what you are doing to it. Did you etch it?

Changed the first one (so check it also) and here is another pic. I did etch the blade. Soaked it in vinergar until it got the color and contrast that I wanted. Took about 2 hours.

That's a nice, big sweet spot. What else are you going to do to it?

When you say 'soaked', was it suspended, or wrapped in vinegar-soaked something?

BTW, I don't think your first pic changed. Or else it's my browser.

I wanted to see what temper line I had on my 12" villager too. After convexing the edge and bringing up the polish I etched it in hot vinegar. I glued a cap on an 18" piece of 2" PVC pipe. After the glue set up, I put the pvc pipe in the oven at 250" for about 10 minutes. With a glove I held the upper 14" on the counter and pressed the pipe nearly flat, so a khuk would fit into it. Now I can etch all but the widest blades. It soaked in the hot vinegar for about 45 minutes. The blade was washed with soap and water and then rubbed with a paste of baking soda to neutralize the acid. A little flitz and some elbow grease took off the oxide coating, leaving a pretty good temper line. I had a heck of a time getting a picture, but I think you can see the hardened zone.

Nice.

I like baking soda as a general blade cleaner.

Here's a little enhancement on the pic:

"like a duck to water"? Are you asking for a visit from out resident foul fowl? :D Or just a *cough* slip of the tongue. *cough* ;) :)

Brian

BTW... I must have been snoozing, too. FWIW: I take it as a sign from my thrifty (cheap) gods. I need only one khuk.
