12" khuks -- any thoughts?

I love the 12in villager AK I have. I also love the Pen knife I have.

There is less surface on the blade to drag when I split wood with the AK, and the weight distribution is better on the AK for chopping.

But it really isn't a competition for me. The Pen is one of the original run, and has been to Afganistan and back, so I treasure it.

The 12in AK villager was made for the likes of me to abuse, so it is most often carried. I put a belt clip on the sheath, and one of Greg Sikes' little file knives as a karda. It is easy-on, easy-off, and is perfect for general utility walking around.

None of the 10-12 inch blades are practical for me in hunting or skinning--wrong angle for me, and too much blade. I do prefer the point of the AK over the Pen knife for trying to get meat off a deer carcass, whe I have had to.

Your mileage may vary. For general utility, any of these are just fine.

For chopping, I prefered the Bura 15in AK I had, but then, I wasn't harvesting wood for the winter, nor deforesting the north like Philthgeezer. (Get him to show you some pictures of up North! Not a tree left after he got started with H.I. Khuks.)

this thread is sounding like a Pen Knife infomercial....!

not that I mind, of course....

I've had all 3 - PK, AK & Siru in 12" and I like them all for different things.

Sarge used to say that the 12" Siru was his favorite "pointy" khuk-knife. That is, if he wanted something stabby and slicey. The AK is a good go-between/all-around and the PK is the definite chopper. Makes the 12 inches feel bigger.

There have been quite a few of them come in with wood/steel handles. Has been a while, perhaps....maybe a quick email to Uncle to see if there are any stock? I bet he has some...

I've been waiting for one in antler or fancy "USA wood".
(fingers crossed...missed a nice one a few months back :( )
