  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

'13 is over. What do you want to do in '14?

A few of my goals for this year will be carry overs from last year as well.
1- I would like to forge a large hidden tang Bowie closer to shape than I currently can
2- I would like to complete a hidden tang with a guard fit that is better than just good enough
3- I want to hand forge weld my first billet of Damascus
4- I want to finally build a presentable folder based on the ones I have been building and testing as prototypes this past year.
5- lastly, I would also like to complete at least 20 knives this year. (Yeah right)

ETA--- color me jealous Don! I think being able to learn from Murray carter would be just awesome.

Great thread Jason,

For 2013 I managed to have a new website made and I would like to increase my web presence. I plan on improving my photography skills so I can post more on the forums and sell some of my knives here. I have found that I really enjoy making kitchen cutlery and I want to expand on that this year and I would also like to refine my ability to make a functional and presentable folder.

I started making knives at the end of last year and made about 40 this year. Made around $750 selling them, although I probably spent more than that on tools, supplies, and such it always helps to make a little back so I can keep doing it. Improved immensely, a lot of which I attribute to this site. A huge wealth of knowledge on here, I hope new makers in 2014 can see this. In 2014 I want to work with some stainless and either build a better grinder or variable speed up my craftsmen. Either way 2014 is looking good.

I agree, interesting thread Jason.

Health problems cut down on shop time but I still would like to accomplish a few things this year.

Apply to the Canadian Knifemakers Guild
Attend my first knife show, as a visitor of course.
Finish acquiring the last few things I need to make my shop complete.
Explore casting a little bit more.
Explore engraving a bit more.
Just generally get better at grinding, fit and finish.
And of course my ultimate goal, create knives that make people dream myself included.

My goal for 2014 is to complete all of the projects I have started but not finished. 2013 was spent in building the 'knife' station of my shop and integrating it into my work flow. I must have 20 of these projects scattered around my shop. They are not all knives, but I do have 5 or 6 knives to finish.

I plan on having more fun with knives and the knifemaker's community than I did in 2013. And that will be hard, as 2013 was the most fun I can remember. On to bigger and better things...Teddy

I just started this knife making journey at the end of 2013. It's strange that it took me so long to actually commit to this because I've been interested in it for probably 40 years. My Grinder in a Box build is essentially finished and I now have materials on hand. My goal for 2014 is to start making knives; at least one a week. Each knife should improve on the previous in fit, finish and aesthetics. I feel I am coming into this with a very useful skillset and being semi-retired, I have the time to commit. I'm pretty excited about the upcoming year.

2013: I am thankfull for family and customers that supported my knifemaking.

2014 Goals: Start heat treating with an oven that is on order, start making liner locks in February and make at least 20 this year, get 220V electrical in the shop, and get an LLC.

I only met 2/5 ths of my goals for 2013. I need to get 3/5 ths better next year.

To actually make some knives is my goal lol. I haven't made anything since I started my new job in June. The mental energy it requires of me seems to have just sapped out all of my artistic drive.
