13 yr. daughter asked for a knife for Xmas

I don't know about online but I got both my daughters pepper spray that fits on the keyring at the local gun store. My wife is getting a ZT560 for christmas, she played with mine and said she wanted one.

I gave my daughter her first knife when she was about 10; (wow, was it 16 years ago?) It was a little Kershaw folder, about a 2" blade. I can't remember the model name or number, possibly out of production by now anyway. I taught her how to be safe with it and proper care and use. Her first mission with it was to sharpen every pencil she could get her hands on. I think she still has it.

You can get her the plastic spydero knife. Too see how she treats it and teach her how to treat it. That's something i would just do first.

Hi,

My 3,3/4 yrs. old son asked for a knife also for x-mas.

I took one of my cheap GAKs and rounded the blade and awl punch and took the teeth of the saw blade with a dremel. Then polished the rounded edges.

Knife had working screw driver and bottle opener and a blade that he couldn't kill himself with. But he still had to be careful with the knife, 'cause it would hurt if he screwed around with it.

When proved he could be responsible with that, he got his first puukko. I got mine when I was 5, he was 6. My wife was absolutely horrified but she had to admit that it was the only way to go about it.

Happy Holidays

I have found that telling women that I got them something pink because all women are simply interchangeable parts in a larger machine works for me. Follow that up with All of you women are exactly the same.

Great! Always nice to have young blood in the hobby :) I was around 7 when I got my first one. I begged my dad for one for a looooonnnnggg time until he finnaly broke down and get me a husky box cutter from home depot. My sister just got her first last month. We got her a Kershaw leek.....she' s 23! XD

+1 I showed my wife a pink mini griptilian on the exchange in august and her reply was, "I don't want that shit color". Ended up getting her a blue mini grip.

Why do we insist that we give our daughters or wives pink knives. It's not a cute toy or an accessory. It's a tool. When my nine year old daughter asked for a knife, she was given the Gerber LST that my dad have my when I was her age. She loves it. She is only allowed to use it with supervision, and she has been taught about knife and gun safety.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but it has always intrigued me that many fathers give pink knives.

I've never given my daughters or wife a pink knife. I've never knowingly bought a pink knife, though I have seen some that were well done. (I did buy a "red" knife from Case that was more pink when it arrived. Never used it, but will likely give it to a niece, or try to dye it darker red.)

Mrs. Claus has said no to the pepper spray as Christmas gift idea. She said self defense items are OK as gifts, just not for Christmas. She is OK with knives, because those are "tools." But no pepper spray or "rape whistles" in the stockings! :stupid:

Maybe I should have given it more thought but judging from her choice of cell phone covers she will feel a personal connection to it; not likly to end up in dads collection. :)

Cool I'm sure she will like the Kershaw you picked for her. My daughters have both had their own knives since they were 6 or 7, one still carries one daily in her pocket, the other in her purse. My oldest has started collecting knives on her own and has a pretty good selection. Here she is with her current favorite.

Very cool, Dave. Reminds me of my youngest daughter who served in the Air Force with some time in the ROTC before that and the Reserves after. She even looks a bit like my daughter did back then (in her mid-30's now).

...It all depends on the person. My son wouldn't get a knife the same age my daughter did. He'll probably need one or two years longer to be ready. We'll see.

Yep. Both daughters got a knife for their 8th birthday. Son didn't get one until he was 10 - all a matter of responsibility & maturity. Gotta go child-by-child.

IMHO, it depends on the person. Oldest daughter is into pink things and owns more than one pink knife (that she chose for herself) but youngest daughter would have smiled, said thank you, and then chunked it into a drawer never to be seen again. Part of being a Dad is knowing these things.

Wife is much like youngest daughter. She has a nice little collection of knives (40 or so?) and not a pink one in the collection. Part of being a good hubby is knowing not to get Wife pink stuff.

Gotta know your women. Well, as much as humanly possible, anyway. ;)

True. I guess I'm lucky. My daughter loves to hunt and fish with me. She loves mossy oak camo and pink all the same. :)
