Well, the title outlines the post, anyone here using a 132" grinder? If so, what belts are you using and where are you getting them? Do you find any advantages to it? Are you just using it for a large contact wheel? Anything thoughts or experiences welcome. I know these aren't cheaper to run than a 72", just curious about people's experience.

Thanks,
Cap

I would think the longer belts of the same manufacture would last longer since the belt is well... longer. Less times the same part of the belt touches the steel to remove the same amount compared to a smaller belt. I had contemplated building a 132"er but I have been preoccupied. Here's one spot that sells em. No ceramic though. If you wanted to spend the money you can get em custom made too.

Here's another.

I have a bader spacesaver 3x132 and have a scotchbrite belt on it. I also have a KMG and a Coote. The 132 is just too big for my tastes and you must sit to use it ....the contact wheel being about 3-4' off the ground(adjustable hgth). It's a little intimidating. I like both the Coote and KMG much, much .

A buddy of mine who makes swords for a living uses 2 Bader Space Savers CONSTANTLY. They're great machines. I'm not certain where he gets his belts, but he's certainly not just using AlO belts. I've seen ceramics and trizact belts there on many occasions.

If you're afraid of that Space Saver John, send it here to me. I'll take good care of it for you...I promise! :)

3 X 132 are metal finishing standards usually mounting 14"contact wheels.

Belts last longer because of the extra length and are available from local industrial supply houses in any configuration.

I like mine and grind all of my knives on it.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'd shopped around online and found supergrit to be the cheapest for AO belts, but in zirconia and ceramic belts the 2x132 seems to be a bit steep. Definitely more than double what I'd pay for some 72" belts. George, since you use a 132" grinder, can you tell me, do the belts last far longer than 72" belts?

I have access to a 132" machine that could probably be made to use 72" belts. After I run out of 132" belts I may way to just use it as a 2x72, but if 132" belts could be advantageous, I'd try awful hard to make it easy to switch between the two.

I have a 2x72, 2x48, 1x42, 4x6, and they work like a dog. And that's what you want them to do. Have a great knife day and a safe one as well.

I never run as short a belt as a 72 on the big grinder but can say that the 132 s run longer than the 97 that I also use on that machine.

The best part of a large frame machine is that you can drill mounting holes for whatever length belt your little heart desires as long as it is shorter than 132.
