As most of you may now know, we are in the very tough process of changing over all of our knife blades that utilize 440A over to Sandvik 13C26.

The way we have decided to identify the change in steel will be by the "born on date" (these dates are engraved on every blade). The starting point for this modification are blades that are marked "July 07" will be 13C26 steel, any knife born prior is 440A.

The following knives marked with July 07 will now be 13C26 steel:

*Leek (1660, 1660ST, 1660CKT, 1600CKTST, 1660BR, 1660BB, 1660Trout, 1660VIB, 1660VIBST)

*Centofonte/Onion's (1610, 1615)

*Mini Mojito

*Baby Boa

*Blackout (1550, 1550ST)

*Whirlwind (1560, 1560ST, 1560RMEF)

*Blur (1670SG10, 1670RD, 1670RDST, 1670TBLKST, 1670BLK, 1670BLKST, 1675RDST, 1675BLKST)

Thanks for the patience with all of this.

To insure that there is no confusion, the Speed Bump, Cyclone's, Need's Work, JYD's, Groove's, ET's, and Storm's have always been produced with 13C26.

Great info!
Looks like I'll be re-buying some knives soon.

Looks like a good thread to sticky.

so what steel is in my blur that you took care of for me Thomas? its born on date is Mar07. im confused, though i now know what to look for on friday

July comes after march, so your Blur is 440A.

Thomas, this means the 1660BG will be Sandvik? Cool! Gimme gimme!

are you sure that july comes after march? lol. so i was sent a new 440A blur....ok, that works. just wanted to know. im easily confused :D

Thanks for making this clear. I really need to get another leek. I have convinced myself that I will be able to tell the difference between 440A and 13C26. I'll have to see if its true. The leek design should really allow me to go for a razor comparison.

I hate to even ask the question (again), but what hardness will we see on these July '07 babies? I don't mean to push for any particular value, it is just for my edification.

Thomas, did you mean 1660 CKTST? please say yes,as that is the one I'll be waiting for. thanks

Hey Thomas,

My Leek has a date of Apr 04, but my Blackout doesn't have anything. Can't remember now if I bought the BO that long ago or not.

But when did BornOnDates start. Was it with all models? Might be a good trivia point/question later on.

So, when will we receive knives in Sandvik when sent in for warranty (assuming, of course the knife needs to be replaced, if we didn't assume this, it would be a very stupid question to ask)?

rnr, open your Blackout half way and take a look, can you see a date?

I believe we started with the dates in 2000 on 99% of the USA made products.

Well there is still a bit of stock on the shelves today, but we should cycle through it pretty quickly. I would think by August all warranties should be 13C26 blades, although some may be happening as of today.

MMMMM. Sneaky guys!!! ;) Even 1/2 open, you still have to move it into the spring a bit to see the date. It's covered by the grips in every other position.

Good to know so I can make sure I get a post 7-07 BO Thanks Thomas.

I must say I like Kershaw's attitude:
Good warranty customer service
Resharpens knives
Quality products
Reasonable price
I will recommend them.
I'll also be buying a Centofonte/Onion's 1610 with the new steel when it is available.

The 30th anniversary black/silver Blur that I just bought is dated NOV04, must have been sitting in that gun shop display for a few years. I only have three Kershaws so far and I appreciate the Sandvik dating heads up. I love some of Kershaws designs and I want them in better steel.
