I have always ground slipjoints on a 14" wheel and the plunge lines were nicely eased into the blade. I want to flatgrind a few but am having problems with the plunge.....as it wants to create a sudden plunge. Do any of you grind an radiused edge on the flat platten to avoid this or?? Thanks.

John,

I flat grind all my blades and the way I do it is start with the belt tracking right at the edge of my glass platen and as I walk the flat up I will track the belt over a bit(1/32 to 1/16 overhanging) to ease the plunge a bit.

I think most of us do it the same as Ken.It does take practice and variable speed makes it much easier.Another option is round files.Use a round file and grind a flat on the file so your only cutting into the plunge. The filing is done after grinding.Files make quick work on slipjoint size blades.:)
