1st- If he's 'family' it should be okay to punch him right square in the mouth.
2nd- Punch him in the mouth again. Teeth leave some annoying cuts, make sure you put some TAO on those cuts.
3rd- Tough to say man, if Jerry called it a lost cause that's rough. I've got all kinds of stuff to try and bring it back to life, post pictures and the HOGS will try and help you. I for sure would do what I can if it's something I can help with. Infi is some resilient stuff.
It's honestly not that bad. Sure it ain't the prettiest thing but it will still do the job. I would keep it around as my main user. If you want to clean her up i'm sure there are people here on the forums that you could pay to work on her. Otherwise, break out the sandpaper and clean her up yourself.
If you are gonna use her, i'd honestly just leave her as is. If you want to make her all pretty, get to work!
Ahhh, yeah... wasn' sure if he just "sharpened" it or really removed a lot of material from the whole blade. Hard to tell from the pics since Busse already did what they could. I guess the only way to know is to use it and see if there are issues with it holding an edge or if you see chipping and/or rolling when it shouldn't.
Looks like a good user to me. Otherwise, though, yeah, punch the guy in the mouth. And TAKE AWAY his grinder! He needs to go back to basics. No power tools. Not even a lawn mower. He needs to try a reel mower for a bit, as penance.
I have to say that is not as bad as I had pictured in my mind something like a full on re-curve from heal to tip. Just the same I have no idea where someone would experiment on someone else's knife. It just goes to show you really have to lay some ground rules before lending out an item. I myself just learned something from reading this thread. Just to echo everyone else it does seem to be an opportunity to make any mods you might have in mind. If you want to do some experimentation of your own and learn how to hand shape those slabs might as well give it a go.
If it's "better" than new, the guy who made it "better" should buy it from you and since it's "better" he shouldn't have trouble to sell it for more than what you paid for it.
If he refuses this good deal then only because he knows he messed it up and then he should pay too.
Unless it's some 7 year old little nephew or something it's unforgiveable in my opinion.
Either way he should have shot the blade with a gun since I heard that would qualify as a warranty case. Probably since it sounds more badass than belt sander experiments. ;-)
Also how come you give your $$$ knife to a family member? :-O
