The knife seems fine, and the damage is largely cosmetic meaning you have destroyed the resale value. I always use these situations as learning experiences. First, never loan anything out that has that type of value to it, and second never permanently modify anything unless you're OK with destroying any resale value. I had someone do the same thing to me except it was on a zippo folding knife that I got free, so it taught me that there are lots of people that have no idea how to sharpen a knife, yet think they do!

I'd say he owes you a knife. Before you loaned it to him did you happen to say anything like "Hey, that's a four hundred dollar knife. Use it as hard as your want but don't do anything stupid to it."?

Hey Welcome!!

Sucks for someone to have their way with your prom date after only a little bit of light fondleing.

As for the knife, users are beautiful to me, and in the end, it's still a sharp piece of INFI, which I'm sure will serve you well and you'll love her anyway.

Also, I'm betting the heat treat is fine, my understanding is that you have to get a knife super freaking hot to damage it and even then it would be just at the edge, which Jerry and crew already took off with the regrind. Makers or more informed hogs can chime in here if I'm totally off base.

Unless he destroyed the HT, consider it your beater and go nuts with her!

I'd be damn angry, that's for sure... But now you got this, and I'm sure Beef put a great edge on it--so use it. Use it with abandon, use it without second thought. As is, it reminds me a little of the Cattaraugus Q225. I say use it. Sorry this happened to you; hope you still can get some pleasure out of this great blade.

Get several grits of sand paper and just go to town on it, eventually you will have a dead sexy satin finish.

I think it looks better than the coated versions. Maybe get some sand paper and even it out.
Have you used it after it was modified? Maybe it performs better.

IMO I hate coatings as it causes friction against wood compared to satin or polished.

Looks like Beef did the best he could on his end. Use that puppy and enjoy.

I'd just use it hard. Pics are not as bad as I imagined from the story. Buy a few Walmart knives for loaners. Most people don't know the difference between a good knife and a poor one.

Until it breaks in their hands! Maybe in this case it would of been a good thing :D

I'd use the crap out of it. There's a member here who had the shop grind a clip to the point of the blade. Looks awesome.

Beat the piss out of it to see if the heat treatment is intact, then keep using it.

I'd say that your family member just bought himself a used & modded TGLB for the price of a new one. ;)
Other than my concern about the possible damage to the heat treat, it's not "pretty" anymore, but there may be good life left, and ya might as well use it & see.

I would for sure send it to Ban for a satin finish and convex edge.

Well, first I believe i would be asking him for about 500 bucks and an explanation as to what gave him the idea he could grind on your expensive knife. If he didn't have cash and a really good reason for what he did. I'd be borrowing his favorite whatever that cost about 500 bucks and getting busy with a belt sander. "Hey I was just making your favorite rifle better! Why u mad bro?"
