Anyone here have a US source for 14C28N? I'd be looking for larger sheets, 6"x36" minimum and up to 16"x48" (or whatever is considered full size).
The BladeForums.com 2024 Traditional Knife is ready to order! See this thread for details:
https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/bladeforums-2024-traditional-knife.2003187/
Price is $300 $250 ea (shipped within CONUS). If you live outside the US, I will contact you after your order for extra shipping charges.
Order here: https://www.bladeforums.com/help/2024-traditional/ - Order as many as you like, we have plenty.
Thanks for the response. I already checked with them and they're out of stock until June. Unfortunately Admiral's is also hot rolled annealed and oversized, neither of which I would like....Admiral Steel is the only one I know of. They have 6"x72" in several thicknesses.
You sure it is oversized? All the 14C28N I bought from Admrial comes at the thickness they advertise. Thanks for the response. I already checked with them and they're out of stock until June. Unfortunately Admiral's is also hot rolled annealed and oversized, neither of which I would like....
I don't have any way to do it, I could check with Admiral though this defeats the purpose of 14C28N being an affordable (but good performing) stainless. Regardless, they're out of stock until June! Surprised I can't find anyone else selling it. Interestingly, there appears to be a shortage of .156 AEB-L right now as well (which I have been using). Is surface grinding an opion?
I have ordered 0.079, 0.098, and 0.138 and they all are exactly the thickness as listed. The email I got from them says "Please note that it runs 0.040" heavier"...which makes sense being HRA
I'll check those out - Aus8 seems intriguing, though on an initial search seems even less available than 14C28N. But I am very interested in 14c28N, just on a personal level. I currently use AEB-L. I just want to try it.Look for Aus8 or 440B at other suppliers.
I know someone will say, those are not exactly the same, but you probably could never tell them apart without a lab. Check this graph.
Composition Comparison Graph For The Knife Steels Sandvik 14C28N, AISI 440B, Aichi AUS8 Version 4.36
Shortages of knifemaking steels are because we are a tiny percent of steel users. We also want alloys and sizes not used in most other fields. Crucible went under, Niagra will have to wait for the bankruptcy to play pout or find other suppliers. Lots of pressure on the industry. Knife steels are the least profitable, and easy to pick off.
That's good to know, thanks. I got an email from them telling me specifically that their incoming .158 "runs 0.040" heavier" and that is the thickness I'm looking for and I have no choice but to believe them. Perhaps they will be listing it at the exact thickness when it arrives in June. Regardless, I'm looking for a currently available supply.I have ordered 0.079, 0.098, and 0.138 and they all are exactly the thickness as listed.
I'll check them out and see what shipping to the US would be, thanks!Brisa in Finland have 4.75mm/0.187" in 15.3" x 39.3" sheets.
They ship to NZ in a week or so, so worth a look.
I was not aware of Nitro V. Interesting! The problem here may not be in availability but in the size desired. Knife suppliers rarely sell large sheets. They sell bars. Steel suppliers sell sheets. The only exception that cones to mind is NJSB, which carries both bars and sheets.
NJSB has your sizes in Nitro-V, which is almost identical.
Thanks for sharing that! Is it Hot rolled annealed with a rougher surface? do you have a pic you could share? thanksJust received some 14C28N from Admiral today. .138 measured out at .141 per my caliper. So a little heavy seems to be norm as of now. Order from December measuring .141 for .138 stock and .161 for .158.
