I’m excited to announce that we are now stocking 14C28N stainless steel!

Larrin’s Knife Steel Nerds article about best budget steels was one of the big reasons we pursued carrying this steel. It was hard for us to argue with a Larrin quote like "after reviewing many of these steels I think 14C28N is the best. It has high toughness, above average corrosion resistance, and decent edge retention.”

To heat treat 14C28N, use the information in the Data Sheet.

14C28N is available for purchase here.

Thank you.

The CRA/non flat ground stuff is priced lower. I got some Allmeida 14C28N from another source and it was super clean...much cleaner than I am used to from Nitro V or AEB-L from other suppliers, so I would go for the normal stuff.

I agree Taz, never had much use for the precision flat ground stuff. I do FFG on most all my blades, so the flat ground doesn't do anything for me. If I do need flat ground I just run it thru the surface grinder attachment to get what I want.

AKS for sure is my "go to" place for blade material. Always have some of the best prices around and fast shipping.

I’ve bought a ton of stuff from Alpha over the years and have always been happy to do business with them. I just don’t understand why most of their blade steel comes in such short lengths. I can generally get one more knife out of a 47” piece than I can out of two 23.5” pieces.

I’ll probably try some 14C28N…after my bank account recovers from Bladeshow.

It’s because oversized shipping costs more.

Yeah, 24" is a good jump in price for shipping! I am watching to see if they have any 11.5 x 8 sheets or something like that. I may be able to get access to a water jet this Fall, but it's only a 12x12 work space.

Makes sense. I’m curious how the economics would work out for the makers on the more expensive steel though. I’d think an extra knife out of Magnacut, 3V, M390, etc… could cover a lot of extra shipping and then some. It would also reduce the amount of shearing or whatever method they cut it with. That’s probably not as significant in cost as shipping though.

I just like to stretch the expensive stuff as far as I can.
