I just got a catalog that lists a Shallot in 14C28N. How big of an upgrade is this from the 13C26?

Although tantos aren't my thing, I noticed that there is a new Groove as well. Is this a sign of changes to come?

Is it Sandvik steel? I did search on their web site and came up with nothing. The upgrade from 13c26 is 19c27. Thomas said, in general discussion ,that they had looked in to using it but that it was too hard to be fine blank and would have to be lazer cut.

Well if it is from Sandvic then going by number progression it would probably be a slight upgrade from 13C26.
Plus, when "N" is used in the name of a steel type it usually denotes "Nitrogen", which seems to be quite beneficial to most steel types so far.
Nitrogen is the primary hardening agent in H-1, and is used in various other steel types to improve corrosion resistance, amongst other things.

I wonder if Kershaw got Sandvic to produce a special mix for them that would give better performance and still work with blanking machines?

If this is anything close to what I think it is we are in for a real treat.

hmmm, interesting. i know im listening now. didn't know that Sandvic had another in the works. apparently they do :D

The 'N' means nitrided, right? Is that what you mean?
I looked up a lot of different things last night and remember coming
across something like that. Nitrogen etc....

Well, I found these two knives in a Smokey Mountain catalog that came. Both said that they were two new models in Sandvik 14C28N. I could get really interested as the prices were pretty good, $55 for the Shallot and $70 for the groove. Not much more than the 13C26. I am curious as to how the 14C28N will stack against the S30V and VG-10.

I checked the Sandvik site and came up with nadda.

Whenever I see "Nitride" used it refers to a coating, when letter designations are used in the name of a steel type it often refers to an added element.
Though adding Nitrogen to steel could be considered "Nitriding", I'm not a metallurgist so I can't say for sure.

That's what I thought. I found a few instances reading last night
when the word 'nitrided' was used.

Just a bump to see if Thomas will respond. I really would like to know if there is anything to this or if it is just a misprint.

Well as usual, nothing gets by you all, and you just don't let threads go away either.

We've been working with Sandvik in developing a new grade of steel that would fit well for our volume applications and performance needs. 14C28N was then created and designed for us. 14C28N is exclusive to Kai USA/Kershaw Knives, and we are very excited about bringing it to market.

Was hoping to hold off on the details as of today, but will keep you posted with more specifics and it's launch in the upcoming future.

Ok, you can all start asking more questions now.

:p...Thanks for the "update" Thomas...:D
...I like this one a lot indeed...

In testing where would it be located for:
Example: 14C28N has better edge retention than S30V. etc...

Hardness
Edge Retention

Will you offer it in Satin finish, DLC etc?

Will this new Kai steel replace all apps currently using 13C26?

Pricewise, how does it compare to 13C26 and S30V?

Ok, that's enough for now. :D

Yes

More towards 13C26

Can't wait.

Ok.

Mitch Murphy: How fast does this thing go? Does it have automatic transmission? Does it have four-wheel drive?

Airport Driver: Look, I told you before, kid. Don't bother me. Now beat it.

LOL Mike,
That's a great quote. My kids love Home Alone. I made the mistake of picking it up on DVD this past Christmas season because I thought they'd get a kick out of it. My three year old daughter Emily ended up watching it exactly 2,487 times and spent three months pretending she was "Kevin" from the time she woke up til the time she went to sleep!! I threw it in the trash a couple weeks ago;)

More questions, Thomas.

-Is 13c26 in short supply, or is it that the 14C28N offers similar/better performance for a similar/better price, or is it the exclusivity factor?

-Is there an approximate time frame that this changeover will happen? (next 3/6/12 months)

-Will it be a wholesale change, or will certain knives continue to be produced in 13c26 while others go to 14C28N?

Thanks,

Rik
