14c28n?

It's not only the cost of the material i.e price per Lb that drives the cost of the final product.

It's also the way the material needs to be processed. With the tougher steels Fineblanking is not an option - therefore we have to go to Laser cutting / CNC machining..... = $

While developing this new steel - Fineblankability was a must, this is important to give the public a good quality, consistant product.

Please describe "best".

Offsetlover, we have to remember that Kershaw is working with specific limitations in manufacturing.
Sandvic makes 19C27, which is equivalent to 440C and the like, the problem with using it is that manufacturing costs go up at the same time.

Kershaw could probably use 19C27 in every knife they make, but you would need to be willing to shell out the extra cost per knife to use it.
The price to performance ratio of 13C26 is pretty good, 14C28N is probably a step up in that it is fine tuned to what you can get out of steel with the manufacturing process they use (at least I can't think of any other reason, and as Thomas said, if they wanted to cut costs they would switch back to 12C27).

If you want high end steel Kershaw has no lack of that. Look at the price of models currently made with CPM S30V, the cost of a knife in 19C27 would be similar.

oh i know about the price issue. i want the best knife that i can get for a certain amount of money. i was more or less curious as to what it was and if Kershaw had any plans for it. no demands here.

Thomas: i define best by what Sandvik has that is comparable to other "super" steels out on the market. see above comments. more or less interested as to what you guys may have planned.

In playing off what Craig said, IMO, when your talking about producing the volume of knives like we do, fineblanking is the only option. To date, IMO, 13C26 is the best all around option available for producing a large number of units.

At this time Sandvik does not offer PM steels similar to S30V and alike.

thanks Thomas. thats what i was wondering. i havnt really looked to much into sandvik. i know what Crucible does, i just wasnt sure if Sandvik was in that area also. thanks for the clarification

Wow, I'm gone for a couple days and look what happened to my wee lil post. Graig and Thomas, sorry if I let some cat out of the bag. I felt like an idiot when I typed the new steel into Google and only got my post. I had just finished buying my first Kershaw when I got the Smokey Mountain catalog and saw that new steel. I'll have you know though that I just finished ordering my second Kershaw..........and the best news is this one is for me! Apologies if you guys hadn't wanted this discussed yet.

Gauge7,

Sure - aren't you the smart one ! ;)

Not a problem - glad to hear your paying attention.

Craig or Thomas are there any updates on this that you can share. I just love different steels. I am hoping that it is some what like Spydercos H1.

I guess it's possible Brasman, but at this point we're just working hard to get it on the market.

Any updates that you can share? How hard, tuff, and will it work harden like Spyderco H1?
