14th Day of Christmas gifts for forumites

Well, this one wasn't for me.

I still wrote Yangdu for something similar. I have some reasons to celebrate :)

I just sent a email to my 2 favourite blade dealers. Yangdu and Justin Gingrich. I will probably get something from one of them :o

I would love to take a shot at the tarwar, but I have a slightly customized Uddha sword coming my way next month... But $120 for that tarwar is looking pretty good.

Also, one additional question for those that have picked up one of these swords. Are these blades battle-ready? I mean say you got sucked into a time vortex and landed yourself in the middle of a Roman gladitorial arena, could you use one of these swords to protect yourself?
BTW, it is late where I am hence the odd question.

Well, other than you would most likely have no chance of surviving a gladiatorial contest with anything other than a firearm(not you specifically, but a modern man in general) they would hold up well, as they are built very solid. They are probably a little heavier than period swords would be, but are also most likely tougher.

It's just that little mark on the horn handle that makes me hesitate...

I'd hesitate if it were a G-10 handle or somesuch, but I'd sort of expect in on horn.

Good looking knives. I was so very close to grabbing that Karda but I chickened out at the last moment. My loss.

Roman swords are generally considered to have been made of iron, not steel. A correctly tempered steel HI sword might have been advantageous. (Some argue Romans unknowingly created steel. What really distinguishes steel from iron is the amount of carbon in the metal. With wrought iron usually having a carbon content of about 0.5 %, steel requires a content of carbon that equals to or exceeds 1.5 %. The carbon content needed was provided by the charcoal used to heat the metal. The so-called "carburization" process created an outer layer of steel. Maybe.)

If a time vortex sucks me up, hopefully I'll have my Glock, which of course will screw up the future for all of you, but should win me a fight against a guy with an iron sword. :D

Just got the answer from Yangdu...

Wow, I must have a really good Karma. And one again, Uncle Bill was right.

Well, yesterday I waltzed into our MA studio to tempt sensei with an HI "Himalayan sword" to perhaps mitigate the purchase of my 2nd Uddha. He demurred, saying that he'd still wait for an Uddha also. 4 LEOs are there post lesson. Good guys. One, a county SWAT team leader, rightous big and professional, hefts it , and declares with a smile that he'd "do entrys with it."

These are real swords IMHO.

I bought a tarwar, and all I can say is HELL YES it's battle ready.

Don't worry, it's not such an odd question, I asked the same one before buying a tarwar. Or maybe I'm more odd than I thought. . .

I have a Uddha sword coming in January 2008 and can't wait for it to come in. They look scary enough and I can't wait to see how much punishment they can take. That's why I like HI so much, you get functional at a great price.

Man, I learned a lession.... That is that I need to put cash back for these outstanding offerings from Yangdu in December....

Oh, one more lesson...

If you do have that mad money saved up, you better be quick! I sit at work and check this site close to 10+ times a day and it is shocking out fast some of these guys snag these beauties....

Okay, I'm confused Yangdu. Is the Tarwar posted here still available or not. Got the e-mail but thinking it was the wrong date? Anyway, please let us know. I'm still interested in buying one.

Try being one of us that can't do that and has to wait until they get home to try and score.
I think I got lucky a few months ago when Yangdu had a large number of the large kukris available and I guess guys don't like them as much as they were still around by the time I got home.

Yeah, I'm one of them too. It's like when you're a kid standing in front of the toy store and you want that toy so bad but problem is they tease you with what was sold and all you have are those pictures. Maybe I'll call in a sick day :D

I love that Indonesian sword, haven't seen one of those before. The next one will be mine, congrats to the winner.

I'd been looking for something to spread my holiday cheeseball on my triscuits.

;)

(Just got my triangular box. :D)

Interesting....

This "17.5 inch 27 ounce Villager fit and finish Pen Knife by Bura" has a most unusual feel. Pala sharpened it, I can tell. ;)

The geometry and in-hand feel of this one sets it apart in a great way. I have a 12" Pen or two and it's nothing like those.

An 18" Pen is semi-unusual, but it's a great design. Notice the attack angle of the blade, when swung, presents an axe-like edge to the wood... at 27 oz. it's got a great 'whack' to it. Presents itself well and in a most unusual way- almost like a whole 'nother tool. Kind of like a medeivel bill (bill hook) blade.

Liking it very much! Many thanks, Yangdu. Will do a review one day; needs to be compared to a regular khuk (like an AK, BAS or WWII) in its weight/size class.

It still amazes me. Khukuries are as alike, and as dissimilar, as snowflakes.
