#15 GEC Electrician?

Discussions of pocket clips should take place outside the Traditional Forum. (The original comment got through my radar, also. Must be using stealth technology.)

or as we like to say,
Ix-nay on the ocket-pay ip-clay. They aren't traditional.

This comment in particular brings new irony to the fact that it is the unmentionable item so chased out of traditional that financed this model.

I bought one today in knifebrite. I am really looking forward to this knife as it is my first GEC. Thanks STR for bringing back this great pattern.

Used this bad boy quite a bit this weekend. Starting to take on a nice patina on the main blade. Kinda gunked up from abuse, so I'm thinking spa treatment sometime in the next day or so. Put it in my kids' hands a few times and even used it to get them familiar with the safer ways to close up slipjoints. Good times. Still absolutely cannot believe I'm holding a perfectly modified GEC incarnation of a TL-29.

Cool! I like hearing that! I almost bought one of the nitebrite myself but went for the ebony to check that out. I thought to use that and nite brite both and it was a toss up.

On the lock I've looked it over more with my scope. Man I wish I could photo it to show what I see because it connects and is a much better lock than I realized. It connects top and like a conventional liner lock at a contact on the blade. The lock is quite well done on all three I have left from my test runs and field testers. Even with the tiny give some display over others its a very solid design to act as a back up for undue stress using the saw.

Mine arrived yesterday and I can tell you that I have no fear of the saw teeth. They work beautifully though and this is everything I expected my first GEC to be. I am going to rid myself of all tactical folders. GEC is it.

Did someone say in-a-pinch tool?

Then I gave her the spa treatment. Then I got back into the irrigation. Then my father in law brought out the craft cheeses and my strek went to work on those. Then spa treatment again. Then finally tucked away in my knife box.

Great shots and feedback thanks guys. I just heard KnifeWorld will be doing a small write up on the STREK next months issue so if anyone not subscribing gets on the list for a free trial copy before Thurs you can get one mailed out to you. Just FYI

I'll be looking forward to the writeup, Steve!
Though I have been carrying this beauty around for a week now, I cannot bring myself to use it. I have several knives and tools that do the same jobs, but they don't have the charismatic presence of this knife. Maybe I'll cross the line if something urgent comes up!
Decisions, decisions!!

Cool man! I've been playing around with those yellow bone models you sent me and today the very elusive antique yellow bone radio knife showed up at my door so I was very pleased since I have in ebony as well. That antique is wow factor stuff! Now as for the EK!? Man I love the thing personally. I ended up carrying a spear since I have way more of them left over the sheepsfoot. The comfort in the hand of the spear is quite good for me and GEC did a attractive blade for dolling up that usually plain look so that all helps! Nice pic! It almost looks like wood on that handle. I had to do a double take! That character is the domed pivots. It would help if GEC did em right but it does add nostalgia>

Nice! Cocobolo right? Anyway, who gets Knife World? I heard today there was something about the STR-EK. Anyone seen it? Just curious.

Steve, I picked up the January edition of knife world and the article is in there. I'm not sure if it's okay to put a picture of it on here. Maybe a mod can say? If it's okay I'll do that later.

I have to say I've been digging this knife lately. Stays in my tool pouch and gets used a bunch at work, and the tool blade has gotten used in a variety of ways. My Clips blade #15 jack is still my favourite go to edc but this EK is impressing me, a lot.

I sure the heck have been enjoying this design.

I suddenly feel the need for domed pivots on more knives...............

The copyright regulations are unclear to me on this matter. I think at this point it is enough to say, "It's in there."

Man these look great. Really like all the special touches you put on these Steve. Anyone have a picture of the two closed next to each other showing the height difference of the two blades? Would love to see it next to an alox farmer with the saws out to get an idea of size. I really like my farmer but the saw clogs constantly and it is not a very pretty cut when I'm done. Installing countertops I use my alox at least 3 times a week to cut some sheetrock, this looks like a great upgrade for a carbon guy like myself ;)

I should have the KW edition here shortly. Thanks

Here are a couple pics just snapped of my two users.

Many weeks in to my ownership of both flavors of the STREK, and I'm still as happy as a clam. I figured I'd do some rambling. I've got pictures too but having trouble with Photobucket. Will post eventually.

My #33 ebony with a coping blade was my baby... it was the EDC that had pushed everything else out of my pocket. No more bullnose, no more phat bob. But the bail came loose, so I had to package it up to send 'er back to GEC. Haven't gotten around to the mailing part of that yet, because I'm just not missing it thanks to the STREKs. Every day I've got one of them in my pocket.

It's funny that I own both, because at first I had no interest in the spear because I had no interest in ANY spears. Never liked that design, one of the reasons that SAKs always left me so cold. But Steve and GEC put together the prettiest damn spear blade I could ever want, and now I'm almost thinking that it's my favorite of the two.

I have both flavors of screwdriver, too :) One modified by Steve, and then one of the GEC modified ones. The mods were needed, 100%, because I really dont think they would have been very useful without, other than as a pry tool, because they were so thick. But I'm pretty sure at some point that I'm going to narrow mine too. I get into the standard drywall and construction phillips head pretty often, and right now the STREK is a little wide to bite deep enough into the screw head.

The saw is nice to have and I use it a bunch. I've got some ceiling speakers to install and I'm sure it'll come in handy. But I'm not an electrician or a drywall guy, I'm a standard joe homeowner hack, so the purpose-built drywall saw is ultimately not quite as useful as if it was more like a multitool saw. I'm mulling over how I might mod it to make it a little bit better fit for me. I might just bevel the sides of the teeth to narrow them, not sure yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining that I bought an electrician's knife but it doesn't work as well for landscaping work. I know that if ima need a full multitool, I will carry a full multitool.

I've given my STREKs the spa treatment several times now. Had to, in fact, because they're carried so much and used so hard that they were sticking and spotting and gettin a little nasty. Felt nice to bring them back and still have a great looking patina to show for it. Carne asada gives carbon steel a pretty patina in case anyone was wondering!

I still sweat profusely at how much I want a cocobolo one, they turned out to be absolutely stunning. But I just can't bring myself to spend $ on a third STREK when I've got as many mouths to feed and as many STREKs as I already have :D In the end I'm holding off because what would I do were I to get one... stop carrying the micarta ones? NOT A CHANCE. But a small part of me would be perfectly happy with one of each of the five handle materials, plus whatever comes in the future. Gotta keep buying those lottery tickets :D

So again, what a treat that the awesome TL-29 was modernized in such a perfect way. The smaller size is probably the best change. Having a saw is huge. Domed pivots for extra strength, the long pull, the tube instead of a bail, all so so great. And mine are made so perfectly, they are truly works of art that I suspect will be lifetime companions.

Great stuff Steve!
